Negotiation tactic? Showing through "leaked information" no one really wants him, view him as a rental, and rival executives do not think he is worth "$50 million" dollars in general.

Therefore, making 4/$48 look more attractive.... despite the fact it REALLY IS good and we shouldn't have to woo him into signing such an amazing offer.

Still maintain, not sure what's crazier. Offering $48 or him turning down $48. He must really, really, really, hate Hanley.

    • Buster Olney tweets:

About Dan Uggla: If the Jays get him, they likely would shift Aaron Hill to third base and keep Uggla at second base. Other clubs perceive the Marlins are absolutely intent on moving Uggla ASAP, and they are not asking for a high rate of return -- a couple of decent guys, no A-plus prospects necessary. They know Uggla's salary and impending free agency precludes them from getting the top-of-the-line prospects.

      • If we're not going to get much for Uggla, I'd rather keep him, at least until the trade deadline. Contending teams would be more willing to pay then instead of getting a bunch of crap now.

          • Scott Cousins could play centerfield. Just get some good (close or ready) talent in return.

            • A couple of "decent" guys? Seriously? I'd actually rather overpay for him if that's the case.

                • because those sure fire a+ prospects worked out so well in the past for us?

Personally, I'd rather get something useful that is ML ready than some potentially good a prospects that are a few years away.

                    • that I am

Just think it is probably easier to project guys ML ready than specs with good tools that are a few years away. If they are going to deal him, I would like to see the deal help the team right now, and not down the line.

                      • you do know you can get a stud player that is ready now, right?

                        these things happen

you're talking like you wouldn't have wanted hanley and anibal for beckett because they were specs with good tools

                        Comment

                        • Oh no... I'd take a guy who is ready now and has all the tools. I'd just rather have guys who are ML ready than the guys they project to be ready in 2-3 years. And Hanley started at SS the year their traded for him, he didn't spend any time in the minors if I remember correctly.

                          • I like Cousins, but I like him as a 4th OF'er.

Does anyone know if Evan Reed will be ready by ST? He might be a nice piece to the bullpen.

Personally, I would like to acquire a SP or CF for Uggla, and sign a FA catcher. I'm not a huge fan of Buck, he's had one good year(last year) but supposedly he's a target, and he seems to have some pop.

                            Comment

                            • Yeah, and most people thought Hanley was rushed. He wouldn't have started for the majority of MLB teams because of his struggles in the minors the year before he was traded here.

I'd rather have a couple of "decent" prospects and $48 million to play with than Uggla. Uggla's defense at 2B when he's 34/35 will be almost as high comedy as Cogs playing CF.
                              --------------------
Second baseman Dan Uggla has gotten used to spending the off-season following rumors about his future. But each February he has been back in Jupiter to start spring training with the Marlins.

                              This time might be different.

When major league general managers gather Tuesday and Wednesday in Lake Buena Vista, the Marlins expect to spend significant time talking to teams about a potential trade for Uggla.

Those talks will be fueled in part by the anger of Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, who is said to be miffed that Uggla rejected a four-year, $48 million offer.

He is eligible for arbitration this winter and could become a free agent after the 2011 season if he doesn't sign a long-term deal.

Florida reportedly has spoken already to at least four teams about Uggla - the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers and two National League teams.

That doesn't mean Uggla has played his last game for the Marlins. A person familiar with the Marlins' strategy said the front office has not ruled out his return but is "preparing for the worst case" by gauging interest in him.

Uggla has told the Marlins he wants nothing less than a five-year deal, which doesn't appeal to the club because he will turn 31 on March 11. But people close to the slugger aren't ruling out the possibility that he would take a richer four-year deal.

Last winter, Florida actively shopped Uggla without success because other teams balked at the Marlins' demands for top prospects. Their demands this winter might not be so high if their main motivation is to save money to spend on other players.

The payroll is expected to rise from about $47 million in 2010 to $50 million, and they have earmarked at least $10 million for Uggla. Trading him could free up cash for another big need: a catcher.

There is mutual interest between the Marlins and free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski, 33, but he might be too expensive for Florida. He made $6.75 million in 2010 with the Chicago White Sox.

Uggla's departure would create a void at second base; Emilio Bonifacio would be the best option in the organization, but he has no power and a .251 average in parts of four seasons.

Chris Coghlan is another possibility at second base, but he was told to prepare for center field after the Marlins traded Cameron Maybin to San Diego on Saturday.

Although teams usually do most of their business at the annual winter meetings in December, the Marlins have been busy this month. They added three relief pitchers last week in the Maybin deal and a trade that sent underachieving pitcher Andrew Miller to Boston.

"You try, hopefully, to get out in front of the market before attention turns to free agency and other things,' baseball operations president Larry Beinfest said. "We still have the whole winter to work on the whole ballclub. There are some other things we'd like to do.'

Uggla was the Marlins' top offensive producer in 2010, batting .287 with 33 homers and 105 RBI, all career highs. He also made a career-high 18 errors.

Uggla said he wants to remain with the Marlins. But he wouldn't elaborate on what it would take for that to happen.

"What it will take to make or break this deal? Those (details) have to stay private,' he said last week.

And I would rather hold onto Uggla then sell him low because Loria is pissed at him. Act in the best interest of the club and not based on emotions.
