UPDATE: The Miami Herald reported Friday night that the San Francisco Giants put in a winning claim for Ross, citing two league sources.

But Andrew Baggarly writes that the Giants' plans were to cimply stop the rival Padres from acquiring Ross, suggesting there will not likely be a deal that brings Ross to the Bay Area.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark tweeted Friday that a National League team has claimed Florida Marlins outfielder Cody Ross and the Fish are expected to explore a deal with that team.

Ross was a heavily-eyed subject of trade talks prior to the July 31 non-waiver deadline but no deal was made.

Ross is due a hefty raise from the $4.45 million he made this season as a third-year arbitration-eligible player who will be one year from free agency.

FoxSports.com opines that the Fish are motivated to move Ross to make room for Cameron Maybin, who could be the club's centerfielder of the future, and add that neither the Phillies nor the Braves are the claiming team.
