As last week’s amateur draft was unfolding, one rival scout remembered thinking to himself as the Marlins were making their picks: “Holy (expletive). The Marlins are a player now.”

“It was their best draft in 10 years,” said the scout, who asked not to be identified
    .

The scout noticed that the Marlins’ drafting philosophy had changed from what had been a conservative approach of taking “safe” players with lower ceilings to selecting more athletic players with higher potential upsides.

The reason: new Marlins vice president of player development Gary Denbo wielded greater influence in the drafting process than did long-time vice president of scouting Stan Meek, whose role has diminished.

One obvious beyond the types of players the Marlins drafted: while Meek was made available to reporters to discuss the draft beforehand, it was Denbo who spoke to them afterward to summarize the team’s selections.

    • According to Jonathan Mayo, the Marlins signed their 5th round pick, Chris Vallimont, slightly below slot. They've now signed arguably their 3 most intriguing draft picks in Scott, Banfield, and Vallimont.

        • Still need like 4 years to evaluate the draft, but there is a lot to be encouraged about for this draft.

Might want to slow that thinking to see if they can sign the rest. Sounds like Johnson either wants more or doesn't want to sign below slot which is the hold up with him and the Banfield signing. Not negotiating with Scott and just giving him full slot may come back to bite them in the ass. Still hate focusing on him without at least trying to get him to accept below slot. Seems like they were trying to make headlines signing him quick. Will be a real shame if they can't sign Johnson, Banfield, or Pompey.

They can sign all 3. The issue is if they sign Johnson and Pompey to slot they have to pay tax since they will be OVER slot so they are trying to get 1 of them to take less

                    • Not sure how much they know but Fish Stripes has that Andrew Martinez will be signing and heading to the GCL. Milb has a profile made for the Andrew Miller we just drafted. Also still think there may be a chance they could sign Riley Egloff. He is committed to a JC because he wants to go pro. Oh and Bordner appears to have signed but there has been no announcement yet.

Not sure about whats going on with Cameron Barstad. I saw reports early on that he was planning to sign but nothing since.

Banfield officially signed yesterday. Pompey tweeted out something that makes it look like he's about to sign as well.

                        Tristan Pompey⁶

The thing with the TOP 10 guys is u can't "sign" them until u work out details with others because if u don't sign a guy in Top 10 Rds u lose that $$ pool. Barstad has agreed to the deal, probably just waiting to sign Johnson or Pompey before they announce it

Not heard any of the other 3 names signing but would all be solid signings. U can offer up to $125k so

For record. I am all about teams signing as many draft picks/UDFA as possible-sign them and see which ones can stick

Per source: The marlins are close to finalizing contracts with INF Osiris Johnson and OF Tristan Pompey, their 2nd and 3rd round picks. Deals not completed yet, and physicals still must be completed. Both should be done in near future. @MLBPipeline

                            • Great news and means all the guys we were supposed to sign have signed. Be interesting to see if they have any cash left for guys like Egloff or someone

More #MLBDraft signing info. All in top 10 rounds will sign. Look for Osiris Johnson and Tristan Pompey, second and third rounders, to be finalized and both players reporting to #Marlins Gulf Coast League in a matter of days.

If Johnson and Pompey sign for slot it means we are OVER by $342,200.

We can be OVER by $432,920. Just means we have to pay 75% tax. Yes it looks like for the first time since the slot system the Marlins will have to pay the tax for spending too much in the draft!!!!
