  • 2023 Marlins Minors

Positive notes from Jacksonville's opening day walk-off loss:

Three rockets off Jerar's bat, incl. a homer. 4 rbi (off Bryce Elder, a very good Braves starter last season)

Austin Allen with repeated hard contact, incl a homer. (replacement for Stallings?)

    Quality start from Castano.

    The ugly:

    Amaya whiff whiff whiff

Burdick whiff whiff double play grounder

How do you spell relief? Not VILLALOBOS, BURGOS or GARCIA

As I watched Austin Allen homer for the second time in just his second game, I'm increasingly in to his left-handed bat. His career minor league numbers are quite solid Would be a nice tandem with Fortes.

C.J. Hinojosa has been unbelievable at AAA so far. Plays 2B, 3B, SS. Looking at his AAA numbers over the past couple years don’t understand how he hasn’t gotten at least a cup of coffee in the majors.

As I recall, he looked great in spring training too. His MILB history suggests that he's an excellent hitter who rarely strikes out. Just so happens that the Marlins need a SS right now ... and perhaps a leadoff hitter.

Playing right alongside Amaya and Groshans, he is showing how much better he is with the bat.

he has played 4 games in jacksonville. Also, yet again, age matters. He is 28. Groshans is 5 years younger, and Amaya is 24. His numbers look great the last few years because he was playing in the PCL which is a hitters haven. 2 years ago he put up an .832 OPS in the astros AAA sugarland skeeters team. For context DLC also was on the team that year and put up an .890 OPS. Last year he was on the Padres AAA affiliate in El Paso. Go look at their team numbers last year. They had 22 different hitters who played for them last year who put up an OPS of .829 or better. Nomar mazara put up a 1.095 OPS there last year in 130 ab's and then got called up to san diego and put up a .668 OPS in 159 ab's and is now a free agent. Not all numbers are made equal.

Come back to his stats in a month and see where they are in the international league where the offense is a lot more tame.

Not looking for him to be a major contributor. Looking for him to be better than Garrett Hampson.

Exactly. Important to go with the hottest bats right now.

look at garrett hampson's minor league numbers in his career. He's not good, but theres a reason he got the call and was on the rockies big league team for years. he's better than him.

The reason Hampson got the call was he was on the 40-man. If I look at Garrett Hampson's minor league numbers I can use the same argument you used to dismiss Hinojosa's minor league numbers, plus we're not talking about Hampson 2-3-4-5 years ago we're talking about comparing the two now.

Garrett Hampson, sub .600 Career Major League OPS when not playing at Coors Field.

Hampson was added to the 40 man at the end of spring. Both him and Hinojosa were non roster invitees and the team decided after watching them all spring to add hampson instead of hinojosa.. the difference is hampson did it the first time at each level whereas hinojosa had literally 4 bad years in AA and is teeing off now in his 3rd season in AAA in a hitters league. Im not saying hampson is good by any stretch, but there is a reason he was in the big leagues for 4 full years. He's a good defender and has major league experience. He was a good top 10 prospect for the rockies and a high draft pick, which isnt the end all be all, but it indicates he's more talented than hinojosa. Hampson has higher minor league BA, Slugging, OBP, OPS, and can steal bases.

If Hinojosa keeps it up more than 4 games, he will be up here at some point so it's a moot point. They both stink, but Hampson is a fringe major leaguer and hinojosa is a AAAA player.

I don't really understand how Hampson's AA stats from 2018 and Hinojosa's AA stats from 2016-2019 are relevant to the conversation of who is the better player now, but whatever.

I've gone over Hampson's lackluster big league results.

                        AAA Stats which are better?

476 PA, 429 ABs, .301 AVG, .360/.443/.803 all but 16 PAs at arguably a more hitter friendly park than Coors in Albuquerque
980 PA, 892 ABs. .307 AVG, .359/.493/.852 between Sugar Land, El Paso and Jacksonville.

And I understand you'll come back with Hampson was there at a younger age, understood. I'm just saying to me, we've seen what Hampson can do at the major league level it's not great, maybe Hinojosa is a Berti-esque late bloomer.

Hampson has proven that he can't do shit at the major league level. Hinojosa hasn't. If the team is focused on cutting down strikeouts and putting more runners aboard, Hinojosa is the man.

I mentioned him as a darkhorse 13th man prior to Yuli/Iglesias moves.

I believe the defensive scouting report is more of a 2B/3B versus a SS. Basically, a 3rd option SS not even a good backup defensively. So that may be what is holding him back. I do agree, he has earned a cup of coffee regardless of the start this year. Maybe this is a late blooming bench guy. He has options so there is no rush here. But I do agree, if the choice is Hampson or Hinojosa, I'd find out what you have.
