Trevor Hoffman has agreed to another one-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hoffman, who turns 42 next week, had 37 saves and a 1.55 ERA with the Brewers this season, pushing his career saves total to 591, the major league record.

Hoffman will earn $8 million next season, and Hoffman and the Brewers will share an option for another deal in 2011.

Doug Melvin, the Brewers' general manager, raved about Hoffman's work ethic and leadership this season, saying that he viewed Hoffman as the Cal Ripken of pitchers.

A formal announcement is expected later this week. Hoffman told reporters in St. Louis on Sunday that he was talking with the club about a new contract, so Melvin's quick move to re-sign Hoffman was no surprise.

In doing so, Melvin has quickly addressed two of the team's pressing offseason concerns by stabilizing the closer's role and retaining manager Ken Macha for next season.

Hoffman said often during the season that he wanted to return to Milwaukee because he liked his young teammates' positive attitudes in the clubhouse.

He also said he liked his new role, no longer having to be the face of the franchise like he was for most of his 16 seasons in San Diego.

"I wanted to be a piece of the puzzle, another cog in the wheel, all those cliches," Hoffman told The Associated Press earlier this season. "They have a lot of young guys that are that face and that wasn't going to be any of my responsibility."

Now, Melvin will need to focus on finding more quality starting pitching in an effort to give Hoffman additional save opportunities.

Hoffman had his lowest ERA in 10 years this season and made his seventh All-Star Game appearance, filling in for injured Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton.

While the Brewers didn't announce Hoffman's new contract, the team provided several injury updates.

Left-hander Manny Parra will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and infielder Casey McGehee will have arthroscopic right knee surgery on Tuesday. Right-hander Braden Looper is scheduled to undergo surgery on his right knee next week.

Rumors swirling about Aki Iwamura to the Pirates

The Pirates are on the verge of completing a deal for Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura, according to The St. Petersburg Times, which is reporting that the deal has been finalized and an announcement will come on Tuesday evening after Tampa Bay has been able to reach Iwamura, once the sun rises in Japan.

Right now, it's unknown who the Pirates will part ways with in the trade, though the Rays are known to be in the market for young catching and young pitching.

The deal will be a sign-and-trade one, as the Rays hold a $4.85 million club option on Iwamura for 2010. Tampa Bay was not expected to pick up the option and had been prepared to pay a $550,000 buyout and watch Iwamura enter the free agent pool. Now, though, the Rays can exercise the option, then immediately send Iwamura to Pittsburgh.

Trading for Iwamura, who hit .291 while missing much of the 2009 season with a knee injury, would address one of Pittsburgh's biggest needs this winter, because the Pirates entered the offseason without an established second baseman ready for '10. Delwyn Young spent the last two months of the season trying to show that he could be the second baseman of the future, but when the season ended, there were still questions about his defensive ability.

Iwamura, 30, hit .281 with 103 RBIs in 344 career games over three seasons with the Rays. He played third base his first year in the Majors before converting to second base.

The Pirates are buyers? WTF is up with that?!?!

Yep, a fire sale then trading for a 30 year old second baseman coming of a nasty knee injury with around a $5 million price tag.

                    Stay classy, Neal Huntington

Well, obviously depends on what the Pirates are giving up.

Can't honestly expect it to be much if the Rays' alternative was buying out Aki and letting him walk... they probably gave up a Hayden Penn/Robert Andino type player using the knee injury as leverage...

Play him half a season and you have a cool, trade-able asset

Yeah what exactly is the problem for you guys on the Pirates end?

For one, the Pirates have always been buyers. Just like Beinfest.

They gave up Jesse Chavez, an average at best cost controlled reliever. They gave up basically nothing at all, and in return get an average 2b that will help bring in fans and could be turned into something better than Jesse Chavez later in the season if need be
