that team is so incompetent no matter who the gm is apparently
Otherwise, not like they're competing anyways, so it's not going to hurt their aspirations at a wildcard or the division, really.CSBC Commish

right, they aren't competing, so why wouldn't you give time to the talented youngster in jesus flores instead of letting pudge take time away from him? why hand pudge a 2 year deal and not a one year deal to back up and be a mentor? especially when there are other catching options in FA?Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

A two year deal is more valuable in trade than a 1 year deal, especially for a future HOFer who's apparently agreed to backup status... And Pudge is a bit more marketable in trade and intrinsically to the team anyways. Sell some Pudge paraphernalia while you can.
Also, "talented youngster" is kinda funny to label Flores, dude's got a career .309 minors OBP and generally benefited from small sample size magic last season.CSBC Commish

yeah but if you aren't competing you see what your kids can do because maybe one of them figures it out. you don't do what the royals and pirates have done and hand out big contracts to veterans.
also there were several teams after pudge and pudge said he wanted to start, so i'm not so sure he "agreed" to backup status, probably just agreed to someone miraculously giving him 2 years and 6 mil off of a shitty season.
Rizzo said earlier on Monday that the Nationals sought a "a catcher that could fill in as an everyday guy in the short-term but that could morph into a mentor/teacher for Flores."Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

The "everyday guy in the short-term" might refer to Flores not being 100% certain to start the season. (Currently slated for mid/late Spring Training return.) In that scenario, they'd have opening day catchers of Bard/Nieves, with the only catcher of note being Norris in A ball, I think.Sanchez life

Sources: Team nearing agreement to acquire starter from Rangers for Ray, cash
The Orioles are nearing an agreement on a trade that would send reliever Chris Ray to the Texas Rangers for veteran starter Kevin Millwood and some cash, according to multiple team sources.
The cash would help offset some of the $12 million owed to Millwood for the 2010 season. Many of the particulars have been agreed upon, but the there are still a few details to work out, including a review of medical records.
Satisfying the Orioles' need for a veteran innings eater at the top of the rotation, Millwood, 34, went 13-10 last season with a 3.67 last year while pitching 198 2/3 innings.
Ray, the Orioles former closer before he needed ligament-reconstruction surgery on his right elbow, struggled last season, going 0-4 with a 7.27 ERA in 46 appearances. The 27-year-old has 49 career saves for the Orioles.

The team's official Web site said last night that the Phils had signed Ross Gload to a two-year contract. Gload, 33, is a career .283 hitter. He batted .261, with a .329 on-base percentage, in 230 at-bats last season with the Florida Marlins.
He played right field, left field, first base, and even pitched a scoreless inning.
Gload debuted in the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2000. He also has played for Colorado, the Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City.
The Phillies' bench is now complete with Gload, utilityman Juan Castro, outfielder Ben Francisco, backup catcher Brian Schneider, and infielder Greg Dobbs.
