  • it's if you have roots in the country you can be on that roster, I believe

(except for Israel, if you're Jewish you can be on it)

    • A player is eligible to participate on a World Baseball Classic team if any of the following criteria is met:
      • The player is a citizen of the nation the team represents.
      • The player is qualified for citizenship or to hold a passport under the laws of a nation represented by a team, but has not been granted citizenship or been issued a passport, then the player may be made eligible by WBCI upon petition by the player or team.
      • The player is a permanent legal resident of the nation or territory the team represents.
      • The player was born in the nation or territory the team represents.
      • The player has one parent who is, or if deceased was, a citizen of the nation the team represents.
      • The player has one parent who was born in the nation or territory the team represents.
Those rules aren't dissimilar from what FIFA uses:
An emergency FIFA committee ruling judged that players must be able to demonstrate a "clear connection" to a country that they had not been born in but wished to represent. This ruling explicitly stated that, in such scenarios, the player must have at least one parent or grandparent who was born in that country, or the player must have been resident in that country for at least two years.

      • It's basically like, if they can trace your family line back to a country of origin you are allowed to play for that team. I think during the first tournament there was a big deal about who A-Rod would play for because he was able to declare for the roster of either usa or dr

Seems to be slightly less lenient than FIFA's, if anything.

          • A tad, though the only obvious difference is the question of residency. I imagine, however, that many nations don't grant permanent residency before two years anyway, so that may be a moot point.

There's a decent amount of overlap in the WBC qualifications. For example, under American law, a child not born in the US is a citizen at birth if both parents are citizens and at least one parent resided in the US before the child was born. That child would be eligible to play for the US under both WBC and FIFA rules.

              • Mario Santiago pitched for the SK Wyverns last year so he must be good.

My SK jersey has his name is in Korean (마리오) on it.

Holy shit, I have no idea what that last sentence is.

The jersey says "name is in Korean" in Korean?
