If I had said a team in orange would be a game behind in the East in September, 9999 out of 10000 people would have guessed Marlins.

Asked about the difference between the Indians and AL Central rival Detroit, Perez pointed to Indians owner Larry Dolan and Detroit owner Mike Ilitch.

"Different owners," Perez is quoted as saying. "It comes down to that. [The Tigers] are spending money. [Ilitch] wants to win. Even when the economy was down [in Detroit], he spent money. He's got a team to show for it. You get what you pay for in baseball. Sometimes you don't. But most of the time you do."

The Tigers opened the season with a $133.5 million payroll. The Indians opened at $65 million.

The story made the point that small-market general managers have a smaller margin for error when it comes to trading their key players. It said Oakland GM Billy Beane got more in return for Andrew Bailey, Trevor Cahill and Carlos Gonzalez than the Tribe did for CC Sabathia (2008) and Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez (2009).

"You can't miss," Perez said. "You have to be right. That's why I say it's not just ownership. They don't make the trades. It's the GMs. It goes hand in hand. The GMs can only spend the money the owners give them, but they pick who they spend it on or who they don't. They pick. The owners don't pick.

"Josh Willingham would look great in this lineup. They didn't want to [pay] for that last year. ... That's the decision they make, and this is the bed we're laying in."

Brandon McCarthy had to have head surgery
            --------------------
Yikes. When A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy took this line drive to the side of the head yesterday, we hoped for the best. He was able to sit up, then stand, then make his way off the field. The team said he never lost consciousness.

Today, Oakland released a statement on McCarthy's condition, revealing that he underwent two hours of surgery last night after CT scans showed a few problems.

            The Athletics' full statement:

Brandon McCarthy, the A's pitcher who was struck on the right side of his head with a batted ball during yesterday's game against the Los Angeles Angels at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, underwent surgery last night at a Bay Area hospital. McCarthy, 29, is alert, awake and resting comfortably, and has shown signs of improvement today.

After the incident occurred in the fourth inning yesterday, the A's pitcher was taken to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, where a CT Scan revealed an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture. Later in the evening, he was transferred to a nearby hospital, where a neurosurgeon performed a second CT scan and clinical examination, and surgery was recommended to relieve pressure from McCarthy's head.

The two-hour surgery was performed at approximately 9 p.m., with the procedure including the evacuation of an epidural hemorrhage and stabilization of the skull fracture. Another CT Scan taken at 12:30 p.m. today demonstrated improvement from his previous scan, and the epidural hemorrhage had subsided. McCarthy is currently resting in the critical care unit of the hospital.

"Our first concern is Brandon's health, and we are heartened to learn he has shown progress in his recovery after surgery," said Billy Beane, the A's vice president and general manager. "We are glad to report he is stable, awake and alert. The team will provide further updates as they become available in the coming days. We would ask members of the media to respect the privacy of Brandon and his family during this time. As we travel to Seattle today, Brandon remains in everyone's thoughts as we wish him a speedy recovery."

Straily was scratched from his PCL playoff start tonight, so he'll be McCarthy's replacement.

They've got like 9 starting pitchers of the same quality, anyways.

Aroldis Chapman's save streak was broken by none other than Matt Dominguez, who hit a 3-run bomb. Fuck that guy.

                          Well, it's official:

The Stephen Strasburg shutdown was previously believed to be after one more start, but plans seem to have changed. Davey Johnson announced (via Byron Kerr) that Strasburg is done for the season Saturday morning.

Strasburg, 24, ends the season 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 197 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings pitched.

The Nationals have been put in a tenuous position with this situation. At 85-53, they sport the best record in the majors and Strasburg is among the most dominant pitchers in the majors. He is also, of course, in his first full season since recovering from Tommy John surgery. So Johsnon and general manager Mike Rizzo have been forced to balance success in 2012 with the future of the franchise's ace. Their decision now is to protect the future of Strasburg and move forward with a still-solid rotation of Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Edwin Jackson, Ross Detwiler and either Chien-Ming Wang or John Lannan.

#Nats manager Davey Johnson said he knew it was time to pull the plug on @stras37 after watching him pitch Friday:
We ended his season. Highlight of the year?

It's like when we ended the Mets season that one year where their season was going to end anyway unless they won out and everyone else lost out but we beat em and it ended.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened, it wasn't that we played them in the final game of the season and if they won it it would have at least forced a one game playoff with Philadelphia but instead we beat the pants off Tom Glavine. No, that wasn't it at all
                                --------------------
or wait, maybe you're talking about the game in 2008, since it wasn't that we beat them on the last day of the season in the last game at Shea that year to let the Brewers get into the playoffs. You're right, it was totally not a big deal at all
