For the native speakers, how would you pronounce his name?

            Yo-nis Se-peh-dez?

I'd guess his lastname is pronounced Ces-peds. It's just like Cesped (which means grass/lawn,) but plural?

The Marlins have identified their first major off-season target - a five-tool center fielder who defected from Cuba this summer - and they're going all out to get him.

Owner Jeffrey Loria will lead a contingent of 10 team officials to the Dominican Republic on Thursday to watch Yoennis Cespedes in a private workout, according to a source in the Dominican.

The club will unveil its new Miami Marlins logos and uniforms at their new ballpark Friday night, but officials think enough of Cespedes to squeeze in the trip.

"This guy is a super-, super-talented beast and the Marlins are definitely a player. They really like him,' said the source, who is close to Cespedes.

Cespedes, 26, was a star for the Cuban national team. He could command a contract worth more than $30 million. The last hot prospect from Cuba - left-hander Aroldis Chapman - got a $25.25 million contract from the Cincinnati Reds in 2010.

The Marlins were out-bid for Chapman and would face stiff competition to sign Cespedes. Other bidders likely would include the New York Yankees.

Marlins assistant general manager Dan Jennings and Albert Gonzalez, the club's director of international operations, watched Cespedes on Friday along with representatives of 29 other major-league teams in a showcase in the Dominican Republic.

"They are a player," the source said of the Marlins. "They love him because he is such a perfect fit in (Miami's Latin) community.

Cespedes - 6 feet and 215 pounds - played for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. While playing for Cuba's top league, Serie Nacional, he reportedly hit 33 home runs in 90 games, tying the season record.

Early indications are he will be major-league ready in 2012, meaning he potentially could be the Marlins' center fielder when they open their new ballpark in Little Havana on April 4.

Cespedes is expected to start negotiating with teams later this month. He is represented by Adam Katz of Wasserman Media Group, which also represents Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez.

If the Marlins land Cespedes and deem him ready for 2012, it would let them move Emilio Bonifacio to third base. The team also would have a decision to make on Chris Coghlan, the 2009 National League rookie of the year who had been designated as the team's center fielder.

Coghlan hit .321 in 128 games in 2009 but he hit .261 in 91 games in 2010 in a season that ended in late July when he tore the meniscus on his left knee. Last season he was hindered by shoulder and knee problems. He hit .230 in 65 games and ended the season at Class AAA New Orleans.
