I don't get the Cespedes interest at all at this point. It looks like Yelich is the only super-prospect in the system (I'm on the fence about James' so-so 2011 in the FSL, projectable major leaguer, sure, top of the rotation guy...ehhhhh). And while I definitely agree you can't build a 3 year plan around a prospect in baseball, I don't know if I love going out and spending mega bucks on a guy (Cespedes) who most people think profiles as a corner OF, not a CF, when, if the Marlins have one thing covered, it's the corner OF positions. Stanton, LoMo (although I have a feeling this is the last year he's in the OF in Miami, one way or another), Coghlan (kinda), Petersen/Cousins and Yelich. In that group, you've got at least three starters for two spots and a bench bat.

Unless the plan is Gio or Garza for LoMo or Gaby/Yelich in which case then sure, go for Cespedes or Beltran.

I really think that our lineup right now is good enough to score 750ish runs next season (we had a team OBP of .318 last season, just adding Reyes should be huge to correct that, forget about a rebound from Hanley, LoMo and Stanton hopefully taking the next step), which, based on 2011 would give us a top-10 run output. If I'm the Marlins I'm putting all my resources into finding one or two SP's and either eliminating or greatly reducing the team's reliance on Nolasco/Volstad.

    • Well yes, the answer is neither, but if they are going to blow cash, blowing it on Beltran is much smarter than Cespedes both for years, cost, and production. Beltran is really good when he has 50% knee capacity, and it would let them move Gaby for SP/shift Morrison to 1B which yes, god willingly this is the last year of a 1B in LF. They could shield Beltran and take him out in blowouts in the 7th every game to help him out, and bench him once a week for Coghlan. Cespedes is likely not to hit breaking pitches for 2 years, if ever. Way to much cash for someone unproven and already at least 26. That's all I'm saying.

And I agree they need to devote all money from now on to starting pitchers, as nothing is coming up in the system (I have low confidence in James being anything more than a 5), they have sufficient bats and bullpen options.

I really wish they gave Anibal a buy low 3 year before last season. Would have been an awesome looking gamble right now.

          • The Marlins crew seemed very happy in that video, off-course this is all before they heard he might hit $60 mil +.. I like that we were the first FO shown on the video though and I loved Ozzie's reactions when Cespedes ran the 60 lol. This guy is built like a bull, his swing actually reminds me of Yuniesky Escobar, not Upton.

                          • The Marlins are being aggressive on Yoenis Cespedes, with the Nationals right behind them. Earlier this weekend, we heard there's some divide within the Marlins' front office on Cespedes.

                              • Get him.

Obvious risk in getting him, but I can't help but think how fun it would be to have two guys who can hit the ball 500+ feet with relative ease.
