August 2019 Game Thread

As someone who was a brinson defender, i would like to formally that he just is not good. he's gotten his chance, go into next year with the viewpoint that anything you might possibly get from him is a bonus.

Watching the Dodgers is kinda deflating, you look at their team, and I'm like, say every single prospect we have works out by 2021, are we still even in this Dodger teams league? Hopefully they won't be as good by 2021, but still it's like, is it even possible for us to build a team this good?

the problem will be they have the revenue to keep everyone if they wish too. Baseball needs to have a better system than "revenue sharing" & a "luxury tax".

When you have the kind of revenue the Dodgers have & smart enough people running the team, it's going to create a lot of apathy & more bleeding of interest in baseball. Young people will have less & less reason to start watching, and this is already a problem. If you're young & know your team has almost zero chance, they have little incentive to start watching.

On the other hand in recent years we've had seemingly several years of the Dodgers and Nationals having superteams, that have led to exactly 0 titles between them.

Considering I no longer live in downtown Miami and only went last night because I had to do something right around the stadium in the afternoon, that’s not gonna be an issue haha. The stadium is beautiful but it is in such a god awful location for Broward residents and palm beach residents.

And whoever thought it was a good idea to make home games start at 640 next year is awful at their job and has no awareness of this market and the traffic issues getting into the stadium. That 30 minutes less to get to the stadium makes me significantly less likely to ever go to a game during the week. Just awful planning

Also, I hate to be this guy and maybe it was just one game, but the Spanish pandering is a little much in the stadium. I get that we have an enormous Hispanic population down here but you don’t need to pander only to them. There is a middle ground similar to what the heat do where you can appeal to both the Hispanic and non Hispanic community. But their business model and the location of the stadium as of now are doing a ton to alienate a huge percentage of the fan base, that being people from northern Broward and palm beach as well as the non Hispanic fans

I don't know, you would think a staff that had Scherzer, Strasburg and Gio all in their prime, plus amazing years from the likes of Jordan Zimmerman and Tanner Roark, to go with a Lineup that had Harper, Zimmerman, Rendon then later Turner and Soto would have led to at least one championship.

Completely agree on all accounts.

It's horrible to get there from Broward, especially during the week. There's been a few times my brother and parents have joined me at a game during the week (or even a Friday), and even for the 7:10 start it was tough for them to get there, always running into ridiculous traffic (I work 15-20 mins from the stadium, so I'm already nearby). That 6:40 time like you said makes it even worse. They did that poll and I guess people wanted it earlier. Or it was a poll for the sake of having a poll and pretend like they're listening. I mean, I guess their argument is they're starting earlier so people with kids won't be out as late?

Agree about the spanish too. They've gone overboard with the spanish everything. I get that they need to market to the immediate local crowd, but don't alienate everyone else doing it.

Agreed. I have no problem embracing the Spanish community, but just the way it comes off to me seems like blatant pandering as well as a lack of awareness of just how much of our fan base comes from the Broward and palm beach area which is not nearly as Hispanic as Miami dade and the area surrounding the park. There is a middle ground that they absolutely trampled and ran right through. There are so many things this franchise can do to try to emulate the heat in every single way in terms of PR, ballpark experience, leadership, culture, etc

Literally takes me 45 minutes from my front door in north Broward to my parking space at Marlins Park.

A lot of baseball fans in the US would kill to be that close to a MLB Park.

We have a beautiful, baseball specific retractable roof ballpark. With the addition of affordable eats (the $3 hot dogs are delicious and a STEAL at a pro spirting event) and $10 admission to an outstanding Auto Nation Section.

Literally the only complaint I have about Marlins Park is the volume of the sounds/music.


Marlins Park is 50 times more enjoyable, overall, then when the games were played at Hard Rock.

They plan to get to the ballpark 10-20 minutes before first pitch.

Leave work 60-90 min early (I’m assuming we are adults with jobs that have vacation leave/flex leave etc) and plan to arrive at the game 60-90 minutes before first pitch.

Traffic is WAY less congested if you get to a 7:10 game at 6:10
as opposed to rolling into the area 15 minutes before first pitch.

I think you're mis-interpreting what he's saying/complaining about.

The area obviously isn't the nicest, with nothing around it that park-goers would want to actually go to because they put it in a neighborhood. Over time, that should likely get better. Otherwise, ingress/egress to/from the park is terrible. Small one and two lane roads around the park, one lane heading northbound on 95 when you leave, etc. The changes to the 836 with that new bridge project should hopefully help with that, though. The distance complaint could be the same in reverse had it been built in Broward, as Miami fans wouldn't be able to get there quickly either.

As for the other comments, he was not complaining about the park itself, which is great as you point out. More that everything is latin-focused just about only. Music is all latin, ads, promotions, concert bands, etc., at least from what I've seen.

And yes, the music is also way too loud.

I'm also not sure where you're driving from, from what I've seen traffic isn't any better between those hours.

No one said a thing about the affordability or beauty of marlins park. All I referred to was the unbelievably heavy handed pandering to Hispanics that the franchise has made an effort to do since the new ownership took over. It’s way over the top. You can appeal to Hispanics without appealing solely to them and without being so over the top to the point where it is almost cartoonish. It also shows a lack of knowledge of the fan base considering something close to a majority of the fan base doesn’t live in Miami dade.

Also, I live in parkland which is near you considering I remember you saying that you lived near north Broward, it ain’t taking you 45 minutes to get to the stadium from up here if you are leaving anytime between 430-7.

The next problem with your plan to leave early is that not only is that not feasible with people like me who don’t work a strict 9-5 and have to stay till 6 or later depending on the day, but even if you can leave that early for a regular season baseball game the area around the ballpark is so shitty and no restaurants want to rent space in the first floor of the garage so there isn’t much to do in terms of entertainment around the ballpark to kill time. Atlanta has the perfect set up for what your plan is asking fans to do, but as currently set up there is nothing to do around the ballpark prior to the game aside from drink in the stadium really. That is part of why I think they should get rid of the upper deck outfield seats and put a restaurant/bar type area up there where people can hang out before the game.

And the stadium is in a god awful location given where the majority of fans are. I’m not clamoring for the hard rock days but there’s no doubt that it’s a much better central location for the fan base rather than little Havana

I got a tiny burger and a thing of fries yesterday and it came out to $15

I’m looking at my maps now and at 2:50 pm in Coral Springs right off the sawgrass it’s a 56 minute drive to get to marlins park. No one is getting to marlins park from northern Broward during rush hour within 45 minutes

The music is blasting in certain sections, and in other sections (like the outfield especially), you're dependent on echos of the sounds from the rest of the park.

When he’s healthy that seems to be his only real weakness. Which is normal for a lot of high k guys but that’s pretty much the main thing holding him back from being a top of the rotation guy is his inefficiency with his pitches causing him to not be able to go deep into games
