  • Wtf. They better get more. Jazz hasn’t really been good except for a lucky 38 games last season.

The 2015 international class produced a pair of Bahamian shortstops in Lucius Fox and Chisholm. But while Fox was the more touted amateur prospect and signed with the Giants for $6 million, it's been Chisholm who has blossomed into the better pro prospect since signing for $200,000. After a torn right meniscus derailed his first full season and limited him to just 29 games, Chisholm bounced back to club 25 home runs in 2018, leading all Minor League shortstops. He finished his age-20 season with a torrid stretch in the California League, hitting 10 homers in 36 games following a promotion, and then tied a bow on his breakout year with an impressive showing in the Arizona Fall League.

Chisholm posts impressive exit velocities from the left side of the plate with an explosive swing that has natural loft. He showed in 2018 that he not only could tap into his plus raw power, but also apply it across the entire field, as some of Chisholm's longest home runs were hit to straightaway center. Chisholm's power does come with swing-and-miss tendencies, so he'll need to refine his aggressive approach as he develops. He's an above-average runner who receives praise for his instincts on the basepaths.

There is little question Chisholm can stay at shortstop, with good hands and actions to go along with a strong arm and a knack for making highlight-reel plays on a nightly basis. Those loud tools on both sides of the ball in turn give Chisholm an exceptional ceiling as a big league shortstop, but he'll need to tighten up his overall game along the way.

                  • Anyone else starting to get the feeling they are trying to build a playoff team with no intention of spending money on free agents ever?

Tons of FA SP and not tons of FA SS

                      • I'm surprised Gallen got traded. He just became a top 100 prospect.

I will say in terms of prospect upside, Chisholm has always been seen as much higher than Gallen. The fact that Gallen came in and put up a sub 3 ERA is definitely a surprise.

This is one of the rare situations where the Marlins traded HIGH on a player. I like Gallen, but I don't think he's a future ace. The Marlins got the #59 prospect in baseball for Gallen, something that would've elicited laughter on this forum if it was suggested at the end of 2018.

                        • My thoughts:

                          1. If this trade had happened last July 31st, I would've declared it the greatest of all time.
                          2. Obviously Jazz has unbelievable upside at SS
                          3. His K-rate and very low batting average at AA this year scare me.
                          4. He's only 21 though, he should be improving. Probably start next year in AA again, and go from there.
                          5. This is basically the definition of high-risk, high-reward trade. You knew what you're going to get with Gallen, and it was going to be pretty good. Chisholm could be a star, could be a bust, his similarities to Brinson and Harrison have me a little gun-shy.

                          • The more I look at this the more I like this trade. Yes, the strikeout numbers are concerning, very concerning. But Chisholm seems to be growing into a power hitting shortstop. That's nearly impossible to find. While Gallen is awesome, if Chisholm doesn't work the Marlins DO have backup options to cover for the loss of Gallen. They don't have much of that kind of benefit at shortstop.

If Chisholm works out and becomes Troy Tulowitzki, his value is going to be much higher than Gallen's. Clearly a risk trade, but one I'm happy to see the team take.

                              I am with you 5/5

I am now OK not signing Didi. Keep Rojas until this time next year.

July 2020 - Sixto, Jazz, Monte, L. Diaz, maybe E. Cabrera, Guzman, Rogers, VVM <----- YOWZA

                              • Plus Chisholm would be projected to make the majors by the time the Marlins are actually good again. Gallen could be great but he'd be putting up his numbers on Marlins teams that are likely going to suck. This is a forward thinking move.

Even with this trade Caleb Smith should still be shipped out of town today. Another guy who's value isn't going to get higher than it is right now.
