I think classifying the rays as buyers or sellers is a lot more difficult because they often, like the pats in the NFL, know exactly when to deal a guy so that they could look like they are dumping a great pitcher like archer, when in reality they absolutely fleeced the pirates in that deal. Either way its tough to know how hard they shopped romo but we'll almost assuredly see romo's value in the next few months.

    • I'm sure Romo's value is not great, but I'd have to think if he was actively shopped, you could get a decent prospect for him. Probably one that would fall between 20-25 of our top 30.

Ya, he's a type of guy id try to go for IFA cash for. Prospects for Urena and maybe Neil Walker if he keeps it up, cash for the other guys and just keep taking stabs at IFA guys (not josh naylor type stabs though)

        • Hopefully he keeps getting saves, maybe that’ll help. His hard-hit rates look good too. The other teams in our division should be interested in Romo because there’s no good bullpen in our division.

Well, I certainly hope so. Because right now it's looking very Loria-esque in many aspects, to anyone on the outside

Question about IFA money to anyone that may know.

Any money we'd acquire now would be for which signing period? I can't imagine it'd be for the '18-19 period that's about to end in 2 weeks, right? It'd have to be for the '19-20 period, right?
IFA before July 1 is for 2018.
Draft Picks Before Sunday is for this draft

It is? They traded guys LY for MORE cash and signed the #1 Guy. This year they already have 3 for sure and likely 4/5 in Top 30 and most of the guys in 2019 class already committed to teams BEFORE Jeter bought Marlins

They already are investing in DSL complex

No it's not. You literally had no idea this was even a thing until yesterday when you read it on here and now you're just using it as an excuse to bash the front office because that's your thing.

This front office has poured a ton of resources into IFA and player development since they took over.

                • Ya alot of things u can say about Jeter/Denbo but not doing anything about IFA is NOT 1 of them

                  • Early returns on their biggest IFA signing are about as bad as they could possibly be though. I know he hasn't played baseball in a while (didn't stop him from getting paid) and Jupiter is a very tough place to hit, but Mesa's numbers are pretty much awful in every way imaginable. He's not super-young for High-A, so yeah not a good impression for our $5 million man.

Ya he's been bad, im talking about just investing and actually caring about IFA though, not necessarily individual results. Over time a consistent emphasis on IFA like the new ownership has had for their first 2 years will pay huge dividends compared to our previous strategy of completely ignoring it and resigning ourselves to a competitive disadvantage in team building. He was the consensus #1 guy from last year and every team would have tried to sign them if they had the money left over when he became eligible.

True but atleast they signed him. In past Jeff would have offered 1 million and then been like no thanks

that and every team strikes out in IFA. look at some of the guys the red sox have struck out on and the yankees have had several as well. the key in that market is just to attack it with a lot of resources every year and see what pans out. Most of the time the top guys pan out, but not always, and thats ok. The key is just opening our team building strategy to actually signing IFA guys and using our IFA money as opposed to trading it for shitty retread veterans who wont make a difference.

The dumbest thing i ever heard on this site about loria was when tjfla said that loria used to say spending money in IFA wasnt worth it because most of them dont pan out. It's hard to put into words how unbelievably stupid that statement and team building strategy is in terms of long term franchise health and farm system depth..

Apparently the signing periods go July 2 - June 15th of the next year. So I'd assume anything acquired after June 15th would be for the next period.

Id also be interested to see if you can acquire money for a time period ahead of time or it is strictly based on when the deal is made
