  • Now's the time. What young hitter(s) can the Marlins get in a "sell high" trade of Caleb Smith?

None. They should not trade Caleb Smith.

They have the #4 pick this year and likely the #1 pick next year...draft young hitters. Sign free agent hitters in the offseason. There are plenty of ways to improve the offense without trading your best player. It's time to start keeping good players, not trading them away.

      • If the Marlins didn't have Gallen, Hernandez, Guzman, Sanchez, Garrett. Cabrera, Rodgers, and Holloway looking like the semblance of a great staff in a year or two, things might be different. Right now, an historically horrible offense needs to start making moves. The current farm is pretty much devoid of obvious help and the draft(s) are a crapshoot, even at the top.

Only way u trade Caleb Smith is u get some crazy offer. Acuna/Albes/Soto/Robles like(which they won't)

I would be open to Urena for a package of prospects but thats about it

It was the #stubhubupgrade my dad tweeted at the Marlins (because they put this hashtag on the big screen before the game) and we got selected. I always do any giveaway, promotion etc that they do.

            • Granderson's got to go. He was worth taking a flyer on. It didnt work out. Move on, Dean or Ramirez should be starting in LF for the rest of the year.

                • How do we get Sandy Alcantara to pitch like this more often?

                  • Sweep and an Alcantara complete game shutout. Didnt see that coming.

Ya release Grandy instead of trying to get a low level player lotto ticket in the future for him

Team will look totally different Aug 1

You mean like an Austin Dean or Harold Ramirez type?

Only start him against the Mets

Absolutely no. He has a swinging strike right similar to Gerrit Cole, his FIP and xFIP are below 3, and he has 4 years of control after this one. He got better. Every statistic we can look at suggests this is real. The only argument I can buy is, you think he physically cannot hold up as a starter and throw 170+ IP a year. I don't think we are there yet for a 27 year old.

Also, here is the cumulative list of MLB quality lefties in the Marlins organization:

                            Caleb Smith

TBD - J. Garcia, Quijada, W. Stewart, B. Garret and T. Rogers (who both are really encouraging but years away)

                            - - - - - - - - - -

I forgot Conley, he's TBD too obviously

                            - - - - - - - - - -

I don't know but holy crap where did this come from? I was a start away from casting him to the bullpen.

                            Maybe that's it. Talk shit.

SEND HIM TO THE BULLPEN. ALCANTARA ISN'T A STARTER. CAPS LOCK MAD.

No I mean a 20 yr old in Low A or 18 yr old in DSL. The point of playing Grandy/Prado/Walker is to try to improve value and get something for them for 2020+. August OF will be

                              LF-Dean(1B too)
                              CF-Brinson/maybe Sierra?
                              RF-Ramirez

I know u wanna win 63 games in 2019 but FO goal is to get to 2020. Austin Dean is in AAA getting AB's and learning 1B

None of them are sure things. They need all of the arms until they don't. As discussed, they don't need to build a perfect team today and they need to let everything play itself out.

In a perfect world, it's this in 2021:

                                SP - Sixto, Alcantara/Guzman, Ca. Smith, Pablo/Gallen/Neidert/Richards, ______
RHP - Guzman/Alcantara, E. Cabrera, Holloway (most people project them as relievers), and let's say Gallen/Pablo/Neidert/Richards and N. Anderson/Elisier/Ferrell/whoever
LHP - No idea for bullpen lefties, I think they need to hammer this in this summer's trades/Rule V but they should be able to figure this out

AAA Rotation - W. Stewart, B. Garret, and T. Rogers

The blank line is reserved for a FA # 2/3 lefty SP. Paxton, Ray, etc. They have the money for that and two bats.

I'm not seeing much "excess" to trade here. Urena (and Romo/Steck/Conley), maybe 1-2 of Pablo/Gallen/Neidert/Richards in at least 365 days from today (and that's assuming at least 3 of them work out into valuable # 4 or better SP), and maybe a few nominal RP, like if Guerrero, Brice, or whoever aren't needed at random points.

They have some real depth emerging here, but it's no where near the level where they have a deep longterm rotation figured out plus adequate minor league reserves. Let alone, lefties are a semi-important issue right now. Chances are, 2+ of those guys above will have major injuries in the next 2 years and will be cast way down the depth chart.

They have just enough here as I see it, and it's eyes on the prize of a competitive 2021.

The bat solution is easy - Rendon and Didi next year. They have the money. Go for it. Then god willingly trade deadline 2020, they can do a Tommy Pham style trade and start bulking up for 2021 and if they still need bats then, Neil Walker cost you nothing this year and sign a few of those.
