  • byron buxton would be a perfect guy to go after if they are wiling to offer him a big extension past next year. We have the pitching to do so and we would be able to really get a good value on a long term buxton deal since he has been injury prone. It is a big risk but for a team like the marlins it is well worth it to take a big swing.

What package of Marlin pitchers would it take to get Buxton?

no clue. obviously there is a limit to what we would give up but I would give up quite a bit. if pablo was healthy id say him, Cabrera, and then maybe a lower level guy or 2 like a few of the SS's we've signed internationally the last few years

        • if they can get joey bart for marte i would do that straight up. if we had to add in a yimi garcia or whoever else they would want to shore up their bullpen id do that in a heartbeat as well. bart would be the best possible catcher i could imagine them getting in a deal for marte.

It’s hard for me to believe they’d be able to get Bart for Marte, or even Marte and one reliever. I hope I’m wrong, though, because that would be a coup.

The issue with Buxton is, like you said, you’re going to have to extend him. That on its face shouldn’t be an issue with as many cheap players as they have. But the injury history is a bit concerning. I’d probably still do it because he’s that good, but that would be a little scary. Other than Mullins, I wonder who else would be someone they’d be looking at in that tier.

They'll break even doing nothing for next year - they will improve if they add 3+ real bats, presumably at C, 2B/SS, and CF.

There is no defense for them not to go for it. The pitching is going to be here for 5+ years, and they have a few good offensive pieces despite what is happening. It's time to add the 3+ guys (call it 1500+ PA in new acquisitions) and go for it. You don't sit around 2 years and let Sandy and Pablo get really expensive, Rogers and Jazz hit arbitration, Anderson is a FA, etc. It's time to contend. They've been new ownership for a long time now, and done a generally great job besides the Yelich trade. It's time to believe in your team and go for it. Loria isn't the scapegoat anymore. They have to own all of this right now.

If they don't go for it, they really never will. They can't be in better shape with how the pitching and books look right now. They can operate as a bottom third payroll team for a few seasons and field a team that can get to 90 wins if they hit on the right last 3-4 guys they need. What more can they expect to accomplish?

I more or less agree with this, aside from replacing Marte/Aguilar being easy.

If they don't spend this offseason, I don't think they really ever will. As I said earlier, I don't need a huge payroll, just want some good targeted spending that shows they'll retain players when necessary and sign players when helpful to the club. So far they've not really shown that.

              • From Jon Heyman:

"Marlins are very active. Starling Marte is very popular (Yanks, Phils, Astros, Giants, etc.), and Adam Duvall seems to be in play."

                • I was at the ballpark tonight. It’s painful. At least The Change Up food is always good.

                  • Braxton Garrett with a great outing. Awesome to see.

Edward Cabrera dealing in AAA, Eury Perez dealing at Jupiter.

                          • I knew that the runner can’t go out of his way to make contact with the fielder on a double play, but I didn’t know the runner is obligated to slide. I’ll take it.

Yes, Perez start was his best. Cabrera showed improvement but has to throw more strikes. Conine has been a regular (almost automatic) whiff since joining Wahoos, but when he does hit the ball! HR 24 last night.

                              • that was unbelievably encouraging to see from braxton garrett. if he can become what we thought he could a few years ago that would be huge
