I still think you trade him if he can net you something good. Add him to another deal to get a higher guy if that opportunity is there. I thought that before his dip, honestly. That position is so volatile, if someone is going to pay you for the player he's been most of the season, I think you take that.

The ability of the parties to value what they are bidding on would be at question, but net worth has nothing to do with whether sherman outbid mas, which of course he did, that's why they got the team. If you think Loria took the non highest bid I'm not sure what to tell you. Now, it's quite obvious Jeter and Sherman bid way more on this team than the team was worth, but that's a completely different conversation and has nothing to do with the relative net worth of mas and sherman.

The way I remember it playing out as it was happening, was Mas had the best offer, but MLB held off on it going through, until Jeter was able to come up with a matching offer, and Jeter's presence being the deciding factor in it going that way.
I could be off base, I don't know all the behind the scenes doings, but based on the info that was reported to us at the time, that's what it seemed like to me.

from what samson has said, and given that he hates jeter he doesnt really have a reason to lie, he said that report was not accurate and that mas's actual offer was not that high. he said mas always tried to act like he had more money to make the offer than he actually did. That sounds like a leak from Mas' camp or a leak from the previous ownership to try to extract more money from the sherman camp

Samson hates everybody, and everybody hates him, this isn't news.
Anyway it doesn't matter. We got what we got. Mas maybe could've spent more money, but then player development/scouting could've been shit, and we'd be in the same place, who knows how it would've played out, it's all speculation.

So Mish responded to a question on Twitter about if Miami could add anything to Marte to get Bart with:
”New @SwingsAndMishes podcast today. I think everyone will be happy to listen to this one. Have a good feeling about deadline“
He could just be trying to get people to listen to his podcast, but it’s interesting that he picked a tweet asking about Bart to do that. I don’t see how they give up Bart even if Miami empties the vault, but that would be a best case deadline scenario, no? Even if the Bart thing was just a coincidence, him saying it will be a good deadline is encouraging.

So I just listened to Mish’s podcast he was plugging, and here are the cliff notes:
-He did say Bart was mentioned by the SF Chronicle as a possibility. I’m not sure if it was specifically for Marte, but he kind of made it seem that way. I don’t see that though.
-The big part was he said he expects Miami to make a huge move. He said the Marlins have identified CF and C as areas they need to invest in to upgrade. He said he didn’t have any names given to him, but threw out Byron Buxton and Cedric Mullens as the type of guys they’re looking at. So obviously that’s pretty exciting.
-He also said he expects that one of the AA pitchers or Fulton will be moved. I guess that’s to be expected if you’re adding a big time CF or C.
-The last thing I thought was interesting was he said he’s pretty sure they’re keeping Rojas and Aguilar, unless someone blows them away. Rojas was obviously someone most fans seemed to think would stay, but Aguilar is surprising, although maybe it shouldn’t be.
