Spending money on bats would be better. Obviously the bullpen has coughed up the lead in the last 2 games in truly horrific fashion, but to me the real problem isn't the pen. For the most part, they have been good enough this year. The real problem is this offense that just cannot score enough runs. The last 2 games should not have come down to high leverage situations in the 8th and 9th innings. They have had multiple chances to add runs in each game that didn't even require getting hits. Last night they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and don't score....same in Buffalo.Originally posted by Nick View Post
Yes, the bullpen needs to just win those games, but relievers blow saves and have bad outings. It happens. The bigger issue is that this team is starting Isan Diaz, Jose Devers, and Jon Berti every day and Adam Duvall has struck out in 1/3 of his at bats.
Also, HOW Mattingly is using the pen is maddening. Why is he wasting Bender (probably the best reliever on the roster) on 1 batter in the 6th inning last night? Why would leave a clearly struggling Floro in to face a lefty when Bleier was ready to go in the pen and you just need 1 out to get out of the inning?
This last week has been bad all around. And yes, missing BA and Miggy is hard to overcome for a team with little middle INF depth, but if they don't win some games soon, I think the front office has some big decisions to make.Comment

Moving forward sure, but other than addressing the hole at catcher I don't know who you would've spent money on. Diaz and Devers should be in AAA, Berti was a solid utility guy before this year. Maybe you sign Joc Pederson instead of Duvall and that would've helped a little bit, but I don't think it changes what this team is. I don't know how you spend money on guys who should be at AAA in expectation of all the injuries we've had. A guy like Diaz at this point in his career should be better than what most teams can bring up from AAA when an injury happens, but instead he's a disaster, I can't explain it, he has to fit in with his other former Brewers I guess.Originally posted by fauowls44 View PostComment

I never liked how Mattingly manages games and now it is showing even more. 90% of the blown saves could have been avoided if he just pulled the pitchers before. Floro gave up 1 hit, 2 walks had bases loaded. Can't you just put Yimi or someone for one-hitter?
We seriously can't be fielding Berti, Devers, Diaz etc everyday and expect to win.

I think Don just needs to be shown the door now.
His bizarre moves all around (pitching moves, sitting players as they start to get hot, etc), and the overall lack of effort/urgency lately requires a shakeup, IMO. You can overlook his moves if the team wins because of the "good clubhouse manager" he supposedly is, but it seems like his moves are directly causing losses now.Comment

They should have done both. We keep getting told they're going to spend money, and then in an ultra-buyers market, they look at a bullpen with no closer, and a lineup full of holes, and decide to basically spend the bare minimum to slightly upgrade both. It's really inexcusable. And now they're going to piss away a good year from Marte and their starting pitchers because of it, and probably let Marte go for an underwhelming return at the end of it. That, or if things turn around slightly, throw a decent prospect at a mediocre reliever which they probably could have gotten a similar player for peanuts in FA if they just opened their pockets a little bit.Originally posted by fauowls44 View PostComment

I’m not one to criticize Mattingly much, but this game and this inning have been laughable.
He let Cimber hit in the top of the 4th with runners at 2nd & 3rd, nobody out. Predictably, we did not score. The Pirates come up to hit in the bottom of the 4th and Cimber is struggling. Lmao.Comment

You guys need to listen to Craig Mish podcast (Swings & Mishes), he basically laid it all out. The front office (mostly Jeter & some Ng) the optics of the front office are everything to them. They can't stand taking an "L" and moving on...so one reason Brinson is still around. They spent $18 million on Dickerson to basically "do nothing" and made the decision to be cheap & pay Matt Duvall instead of opening up the checkbook just a little....according to Mish, Mr Sherman is not happy at all with when they have spent a little money, the return has been very underwhelming. And don't expect them to go and spend a lot next year or the foreseeable future. The fans were not showing up, then the pandemic...it sounded a lot like to me, that Sherman may force Jeter out and the try to bring in someone else to be the CEO....it sounded as Mr Sherman is getting impatientComment
