Oh, I don't think West is making the rotation, I just hate that you destroy this kid despite him actually showing something in the majors when he was clearly rushed.

Here's my "results" Volstad has a 7.20 spring ERA to West's 4.50.

Volstad showed something when he was first brought to the majors, too. Of course, Volstad sucked last year, and he should be destroyed for that, just as much as West gets ripped on for his struggles.

It's spring training. Volstad is working on a new pitch. Most of the hits (and subsequently runs) he gave up against the Astros came off the slider. His new pitch. Volstad has only walked 1 guy in 5 innings. He's not struggling to throw strikes like West is.

Volstad doesn't throw that new pitch every time to every batter.

However, there is a constant threat of rain.

Volstad working on slider: Right-hander Chris Volstad of Palm Beach Gardens allowed four runs on six hits in three innings. Volstad said most of the hits were on sliders, a pitch he just started experimenting with this winter while playing catch.

Who gives a crap about results when they've thrown like 12 combined innings?

Spring isn't really about results. It's about working into shape and getting into game form and working on things.

So far, West's "results" are better, but they don't really matter. He's clearly not anywhere close to season form, and there hasn't been much indication that he's got any excuses.

He struggled with control last year and that's the knock on him. In games that don't matter, you at least want to see some kind of improvement there.
