Fredi Gonzalez will remain manager of the Marlins, according to a major-league source.

Gonzalez signed a contract extension through 2011 last February, but his job security came into question over the weekend after ESPN.com reported that the Marlins were talking to Bobby Valentine about a position with their club.

Marlins team president David Samson fueled speculation about Gonzalez's status by declining to state definitively that the manager would return next season.

The source, however, indicated that Gonzalez never was in jeopardy.

"There is nothing to that — zero," the source said.

Club officials met Monday in New York to discuss the season with owner Jeffrey Loria, who reportedly was frustrated by the team's failure to make the playoffs.

While Loria has a longstanding relationship with Valentine, the Marlins have no apparent reason to fire Gonzalez. They won 87 games this season, the third-highest total in franchise history, and 84 games the previous year.

Valentine remains a candidate for managerial openings with the Indians and Nationals. Gonzalez could become a candidate for the Braves when Bobby Cox retires after next season.

Bobby V doesn't fit the puppet mold the FO always wants.

It's going to be hilarious when it comes out that they were talking with R&B artist Bobby Valentino about doing a Super Saturday concert.

So all that bluster for nothing? What an asshat. And what's worse is that in the original article, Samson went on to say that he also feared for his own job security, as his contract is up after 2010. It's one thing to be benefit from nepotism; it's another to pretend that you don't.

                    • Samson, whose contract expires after the 2010 season, said he doesn't have any more job security than anyone else in the organization.

"I’m worried about myself, too," he said.

                        •
• Though Fredi Gonzalez will return as manager, a team official said Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria wasn't happy with some of Gonzalez's in-game decisions. Gonzalez consented to several front office requests, such as playing Emilio Bonifacio a lot before the Nick Johnson trade. Some Marlins baseball people believe Loria's expectations are unrealistic, considering the low payroll.
• Fredi shouldn't be here based on that move alone, how the fuck do you let Bonifacio start so many games? Fredi must be on the short leash for next season
