can anyone explain why the answer for the draft given this shortened season would be making it just 5 rounds and making everyone else available to sign for just 20k? This seems to make no sense as a solution. i can see shortening the draft given the lack of high school or college season, but 5 rounds seems ridiculously low. I see 15-20 as being about right.

I agree fish16. Feel bad for a bunch of high school and college kids getting screwed by this situation. Been around the game in recent years PA announcing games for a bunch of draft eligible players, and it sucks to see their dreams altered. 5 is super short, at least make it 10.

Joel Sherman of MLB Network reports that the draft can't be held any later than July, and that the event will try to be held earlier if the season is underway. Baseball can also push back the IFA signing period to January, rather than the usual July 2 starting period.
Draft can't be held after July but in TERRIBLE news. MLB has the option to make the draft this year go from 40 to 5 or 10 Rds and next year from 40 to 20 Rds. YES 5 Rds!!! If that happens just take 6 BPA guys screw $$$
They can sign undrafted players for 20K and most expect HS guys who aren't elite to just go to college
IFA signing in Jan is whatever as most dont do much for July to Jan. Sign Cappe in Jan and just send him to GCL Next Year like the plan was

In other words its gonna look more like a NBA/NFL draft where teams draft on talent and then sign a whole bunch of UDFA but atleast will have 6 picks.

Sources: MLB & the MLB Players Association have the framework of an agreement that could be finalized as soon as today. Discussed terms on the draft:
- A draft sometime in July
- Likely 10 rounds, possibly 5
- Bonus deferment: 10% upfront, 45% in July '21, 45% in July '22

"Smart idea" would be have a 10 Rd draft and teams have the draft pools like normal. Can't spend more than your draft pool # and UDFA have a max signing # tooLast edited by tjfla; 03-27-2020, 07:28 AM.

This screws so many kids. Even the ones who get drafted end up with basically no money for years. Many minor leaguers live off their bonuses.Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

Given MLB's announced intention to significantly reduce the number of minor league affiliates after 2020, a reduction in the number of draftees was forthcoming under any circumstances, wouldn't you say? I presume there will be growth in Independent leagues to accomodate the wishers and hopers.

on another note i saw a heyman tweet today that the league could use this weird shortened season to experiment with a 14 team playoff. I wouldnt be shocked if we see some improvements combined with a smaller sample size to see us sneak into a playoff spot even though we probably wont be a good team. This is gonna be a weird year but we're still a long time from baseball

Yeah I don't think the players are going to get 3 weeks to ramp up. Not like we're going to start up Spring Training again. So it'll have to be backfield stuff, which hopefully they'll get a chance to do prior to the decision of allowing large-scale gatherings again. There's money to be made, players aren't going to get an ideal ramp up to meaningful games.

Marlins Option Monte Harrison, Nick Neidert per MLBTraderumors
Neidert is pretty much a sure thing to log starting time in Miami soon. Harrison? As the team's oldest prospect in top thirty and barely a league average hitter at AAA, his odds don't seem too great.
