From what I gathered in speaking to Marlins there is very little shot of a reunion with Ozuna. If it goes to qualifying offer, you can put that at 0%. Not giving up a pick. His agent change was one of the more curious ones of the season.

This leaves the pool the opt outs (Strausburg, Grandal, JD, Chapman, Kenley), and guys without QFA - Castellanos, Puig, Hamels, K. Gibson, S. Castro, Avisail, H. Kendrick, Dozier, Asdrubal, C. Dickerson, W. Smith(RP), and any of the probably/maybes above
This really boils down to Strausburg and Castellanos as the only big ticket items without compensation attached, and then it's just solid normal starters guys around them.
It's really looking to me it's Castellanos or bust as I'm not into anyone beyond 2 years in the non-QFA pile (the opt-outs are good, but Strausburg has mileage, not worth investing in C or RP right now, and if you hate Castellanos defense, let's take a look at JD).
I'm still in line with creating a better product and culture, so I'd go for Castellanos, re-sign Castro for 2, sign a SP rehab project like A. Wood, keep Urena and Conley, fill out the bench with Romo, N. Walker, and another veteran infielder guy who can play a few positions
This is going to be $80 million:
Alfaro, Wallach/Heineman/Holaday (pick 1)
Cooper, N. Walker
Isan (Berti)
Rojas (Berti)
S. Castro, Some other veteran, cheap
B. Anderson
Berti, Sierra, Brinson
Castellanos
Sandy, Caleb, Pablo, Urena, A. Wood rehab project type (Elisier, Yamamoto, Dugger have options in AAA)
Romo, Stanek, Steckenrider, Brice, Brigham
Garcia, Conley, Quijada/camp lefty battle
And Monte, L. Diaz, Sixto, Neidert, Guzman, and Elisier is probably the mid-season call-up package, with an outside shot for J. Sanchez or Jazz if they really take off

The no pick stance seems like giving themselves a reason to not spend money. Not that we don't need to continue improving the minor league system, but find another way. You're not giving up a top 5 pick or anything. Keep spending on IFAs and the minor league system should be fine if you trust what you've done so far with it.

That could also just mean they don't want to give up a pick for Ozuna specifically. Whereas a guy like Cole or Rendon are in a different tier, so they'd warrant giving up the pick.
That said, I think the "pick bar" is quite high meaning there are only a few (if not only those two) that can eclipse that value of the pick.
Just to note, Keuchel can't have a QO, as he had one last year and you can only be offered a QO once now.

Frisaro is reporting this:

Some #Marlins coaching staff news: Catching coach Brian Schneider and bullpen coach Dean Treanor will not be returning in 2020. All on manager Don Mattingly's staff were on 1-yr deals. So decisions still being made on others. Several are expected back.

But, that doesn't matter for Rendon or Cole if they want to go for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they traded Urena after Jan 1 so they could get another pick. With that being said Ozuna is still in play just not very likely-u could sign Ozuna(give up #43) and then trade Urena to a Oakland/TB/? for #38 but very very doubtful

Good catch. I think this is Mouse too then. Not that the Marlins are going to sign those guys though.

We don't need any more band-aids, ala Walker and Granderson. That's exactly what Pence would be, we should be focused on players that will help us in 2021 and beyond. Also, he had a .590 OPS in 2018, so who the f knows what you'll get out of him next year.

I listened to Mish last pod (swings and Mishes) and he said flat out the marlins don't plan on spending this offseason and going forwards they plan to operate like the Oakland. Why do you guys think they will spend any money ? have there been any indications of this?

It's a perfect opportunity to bring in some reasonable players that can be used for now and the future. It's like the Nationals signing Jayson Werth a year early.
They should sign a longterm right handed bat or a good # 3 or better SP to lay the ground work for contending, and then fill out the roster with two Starlin Castro types and not Granderson and Prado.
