Right now, it appears the rotation would be Urena, Straily, Despainge, Alcantara, and either Hernandez/Smith/Nicolino. The nod would likely go to a lefty...so I'm hoping for Smith over Nicolino.

That's good - he was getting crushed. Peters went too - off to find his failing command (my biggest spring disappointment).

      • Adam Conley can’t make the Marlins rotation.

        He’s cooked.

        • I'd go with Urena, Straily, Despaigne, Smith and Hernandez (He's looked decent in the spring, might as well find out what you've got) Let Alcantara work on stuff in AAA, and call him up when a. He's ready and b. the service time as advantageous.

          • Straily, Urena, Despaigne, Ca. Smith (Chen DL)
            Ziegler, Barraclough, Steckenrider(Wittgren DL)
O'Grady, Tazawa, J. Turner, E. Hernandez, Nicolino, and pick a guy on the 40 man, let's go with T. Guerrero

Also maybe flip Smith/Turner, or sign a veteran like Hellickson. They don't need a true 5th SP until mid-may.

Guerrero is just there until Wittgren is ready, and Alcantara, Peters, Garcia, and Conley will all inevitably be up soon.

Hope they make Conley a reliever and save Alcantara's service time.

            - - - - - - - - - -

Also, Garcia has 1.003 days of service time. If he is down a few weeks, the Marlins get an extra year of club control. At least they are maneuvering his time correctly.

You actually get another year of Conley if he is down until basically May 1 too. Again, make him a reliever and hopefully Conley and O'Grady are the lefties for awhile.

Looks like Ellington,Prado and Chen will be on DL. Riddle and Wittgren are playing in "B" Games but wouldn't be surprising to see them miss first week or 2 of ML play(most like in AAA for rehab)

Elieser is a lock especially with Wittgren out and Graves will probably be sent back

I could see Guerrero up(he has looked good in ST) until Wittgren is ready and love the Conley to pen idea. Yes they are considering it I have heard they might try to flip him for another arm.(FO/Mattingly are sick of Conley is the rumor)

Yea, Graves is whatever. Guerrero is also whatever but on the 40 for an injury. He'll rarely play anyways.

I know I am a broken record, but the only thing that matters is maneuvering the service time. Get the extra year of Alcantara, Peters, J. Garcia, and hell Conley is on the list now too.

Totally agree with u. 2018 and 2019 are throw away years for us. I would rather keep them down for 1 month and get an extra year of control when we are good

They really need a Vet SP arm unless just say screw it and let Turner do it

To be fair, he doesn't look overmatched. Maybe not great, but he's holding his own.

                        • God it would be incredibly foolish to keep alcantara up and they look like they are gonna do it.

Also, on top of Dietrich havign a good spring, Castro is as well.

I dont think the marlins are maneuvering Garcia's time at all, just a consequence of trying to stretch him out and trying him as a starter.

He’s definitely Marlins ready (even though I think he should stay down till May 10th).
very good point. Those are 2 different standards this year.

                          - - - - - - - - - -

So roster as of now looks like this:

                          C- JT, Telis
                          1b- Bour
                          2b- Castro
SS- Rojas/ Adames until riddle comes back
                          3b- Anderson
                          LF- Dietrich
                          CF- Maybin/Brinson
                          RF- Cooper/Vanslyke

SP- Urena, Straily, and then for the final 3 im gonna be optimistic service time wise and just hope we go with Nicolino, Despaigne, and Smith. am i missing anyone else that has a realistic chance besides them to keep Alcantara out of the rotation now that conley, Garcia, and Peters got sent down? I guess turner and Hernandez too but I think theyll keep Hernandez in the bullpen all year.

RP- Bearclaw, Ziegler, Tazawa, Steckenrider, O'Grady, Hernandez, and who else? I feel like im missing bullpen arms now that Wittgren and Ellington will be on the DL to start the year.

On a side note, we're gonna be startign the year with a pretty full DL list already, although most will be back shortly after opening day: Prado, Riddle, Wittgren, Ellington, Chen.

And to continue my rant today, i saw a columnist today criticizing fans who are cheering for teams to manipulate the service time of guys. It just makes no sense to me why teams continue to get shit on for playing intelligently within the rules instead of criticizing MLB and MLBPA for negotiating the system this way. Same thing goes for teams who tank in the NBA. Dont blame teams for doing the smart thing based on the rules, blame the people who make the rules.

unless he turned us down that's a bad job by us not offering him more

                              • Man i just noticed how bad Bour has been in the spring. Doesnt really mean much but he's OPS'ing .441 with just 4 hits in 25 AB's. Only 1 double as his only extra base hit. Doesnt matter, just want him to stay healthy for the first time, but still not a great spring thus far.

                                - - - - - - - - - -

So we're just not gonna sign one of these bargain SP's before the end of the year? I think Alcantara can be respectable this year (something like a 3.8-4.3 ERA) but really doesnt make much sense to start him off the rotation when he still has things to work on and we're not going anywhere. I understand being upset by guys being held back like Acuna or Bryant when they are clearly ML ready, but our guys just arent like that. Both Alcantara and Brinson can be sent down and have legitimate things they could work on but it's looking like we're gonna be ridiculously short sighted when there are such easy ways to not have to do that, especially when we have this free agent market still with really solid low key options right now.
