If Uggla felt the only way to draw attention to the problem was going through the media, then so be it. He shouldn't have done that, but I can see where he's coming from if Hanley's "diva-ness" isn't being addressed by anyone else in the organization. Which it apparently isn't.

Whatever. The team will probably use this incident to justify bringing in another "veteran presence" this offseason, so that shit like this gets handled out of view of the media.

Uggla's saying Hanley is dogging it these days and now wants to protect his numbers. Hanley has carried this team all season long. Seems like a bitch move by Uggla and whoever else raised their arms in disgust last night after Hanley got hurt. Since when can one person know how hurt another is?

There's no reason for Uggla to raise his arms or whatever in that situation. If he feels that way, handle it in the clubhouse.

But without knowing all of the other history surrounding Hanley in the locker room, it's hard to say that Hanley's innocent in this whole thing. If this was the only incident, then yeah, he's probably getting a bum rap. But if this was the straw that broke the camel's back or whatever, it's a different story.

Uggla handled the situation terribly, but I don't know enough about the entire background of the situation to say Hanley's being a consummate teammate and Uggla's thoughts are in the wrong. Uggla's actions surely are, but the message behind the actions may not be.

I agree. They shouldn't be belittling an injury, because in the end, him playing with a bona fide injury could be worse for the team than him resting. The troubling aspect is that it seems to be more than just Uggla.

I imagine that it's one of those "chicken or egg" scenarios. Which came first? Them giving him a hard time because he separates himself from the rest of the team? Or him separating himself from the rest of the team because they give him a hard time?

Yeah I don't remember any incidents of Hanley pulling himself from games or doing stuff to protect his stats. I'm guessing if there's trouble it's possibly with other stuff that goes on behind the scenes, like in 2003 when Pudge (I think) and others would get pissed at Beckett for stuff like not shagging balls, etc. This incident just resulted in things boiling over.

But that's just speculation that Hanley's doing stuff we don't see/hear about to piss off the rest of the team. And we don't know anything about what Uggla does either, or if anyone else on the team is some kind of asshole.

The money comment also partially shows the danger with giving one guy a ton of money and making the rest of the team earn it through arbitration, and the resentment (open or internal) that can result. It's not necessarily a reason to depart from the Marlins' contract strategy, but it does show what can happen when one guy's getting paid and nobody else is - although, to state the obvious, Hanley's worlds better and more deserving of a long term contract than anyone on this team, JJ excluded.

Hanley's begged into the lineup a lot. 2007 he authored the greatest quote in modern Marlins history with the "I don't care if it's broken, I'm going to play tomorrow fuck everyone on the Mets, I'm going to play tomorrow and kick their ass."

But all that aside, I think it's stupid as fans to like a player or hate a player for what they perceive to be a "diva" syndrome or for being a mouthy bitch or whatever else. Hate them because they suck on the field. So long as they're performing, who gives a crap if they're card carrying communists who kill and skin baby seals in their spare time while strip mining the heartland while wearing mink coats and eating veal. Most of these people are not smart, are not coming from cultured or educated backgrounds and handed absurd amounts of money which further feeds into their misguided, and fleeting, sense of entitlement.

Enjoy them for their talents, but don't run them out of town for personality traits.

It's partially speculation, but we also know some things. At this point, we know that Hanley has a history of going to the media with things that upset him about his teammates. And it seems from the transcript that Uggla specifically took issue with him complaining about his teammates.

I think this is a very important observation. Too often we, as fans, assume that salary construction occurs in a vacuum. Clearly, that's not the case.

Maybe next time Uggla waits till the reporters are actually gone to confront Hanley about something he said and not go all ballistic on him if front of them. I also am of the group where you make sure to keep the best player in baseball behind Albert Pujols happy.

Maybe this is Uggla's frustration over the fact he is (probably) not returning next year while Hanley has a long term deal. Uggla probably feels he deserves a long term deal and because of that, Hanley becomes his target. I think, anyway.

Either way, lame on Uggla's part. Hanley shouldn't have responded, but man Uggla needs to handle things a lot better.

Both are probably pretty frustrated, realizing this team isn't going to be going to the playoffs and tensions will rise when teams don't win. I wouldn't really put much stock into it. I mean it's not like Uggla is going to be on this team next year anyways.
