it's tough to really picture in my mind the excitement and unpredictability of the playoffs because it's been a DECADE.

The '07 D-Backs are a pretty clear example of a team getting lucky to make the playoffs. There are others.

In the division format, there are plenty of examples of teams who have made the playoffs and probably didn't deserve to be there.

The 2006 Cardinals that won the World Series went 83-78 that year.

The 2008 Marlins had a better record than the Dodgers who won the NL West that year.

gosh, I remember the 2003 playoffs pretty vividly

I mean, that's a pretty long time.

but the whole "haven't made the playoffs in a decade" thing is a little skewed, because pretty crappy franchises like the Indians and Diamondbacks have made the playoffs in that span, and I'm not sure I'd rather have been a fan of either of them in that span*.

*strictly speaking of on-field results, since that's all that specific stat is referring to.

Things aside, and they're not mutually exclusive, I'd rather have the championship and no other playoff appearances than 8 playoff appearances and no championship.

It definitely sucks to not have made it since though.
