I feel like you (Namaste) put way too much into BABIP. Yes, if someone's BABIP is low, they're most likely getting unlucky but when you watch someone day in and out, it's hard to suggest Dobbs or your favorite guy, John Buck is getting unlucky.
At some point, you just suck. If you pop out or hit weak grounder to 3B for 10 straight at bats and go 0 for 10, you weren't unlucky, you just sucked. I think BABIP can do plenty in forecasting a player in the future, but sometimes, you just suck.
--------------------
Ok but I don't think anyone would be saying he sucks if he had a 350+ BABIP like some players do. That's all.
As an everyday 3B, yes, he's bad.
Also, I've seen BABIP used countless times on these boards to argue that Player A sucks but he's just getting lucky or Player A doesn't suck, he's just been unlucky so give me a fucking break.
To use Ramp's phrase, "this place sucks sometimes".
BABIP doesn't exactly work well just looking at it alone. It also depends on their LD rate and GB rate. He could have a low BABIP because all he's doing is hitting grounders and not line drives that aren't find holes.

Generally speaking, people will be looking at some underlying skill set that is being clouded by a low BABIP. Throwing out BABIP to say "this guy does or doesn't suck" is useless without some sort of context.
For Buck, it was his solid power and walk rate from the catcher position, along with relatively low K rates for his career.
For someone like Lomo, again, it's really solid power from the left side of the plate and decent enough plate discipline.
With Dobbs, he's walking and not striking out. That's good. But he's hitting for absolutely no power and he's not walking nearly enough to make up for that. He's basically Emilio Bonifacio in the bad years, without speed or defense. That player sucks, no matter what his BABIP is.

Dobbs is probably better than a .240ish .BABIP guy, but he still sucks with a high .BABIP.
He's, at best, an empty batting average hitter. Just like the rest of the lineup with the exception of a couple of players. (well, three really. Ozuna, Dietrich, and Ruggiano)
--------------------
Maybe. If he had a .260 batting average and .640 OPS and was playing first base everyday, people would probably say he sucks.

Dobbs is not walking.
