There was little that could have been done to improve the current roster through free agency outside of spending big and even then that would get to mediocre.

The teams best player was an awful defensive SS with no power and a BABIP over .400. It's second best player was traded to the Rangers because he was an almost 30 year old with a massive injury history and only had one tool to the point he was barely above replacement level last year.

I'm not advocating for this ownership group. They are garbage. I have doubts that if a solid prospect core moves up and develops that they will spend to keep it together while adding here and there.

But that said the current policy of drafting and scouting internationally aggressively while adding talent while selling some of the older (and too expensive for what they bring) players for prospects is certainly the right move.

The bold is a load of bullshit. they have fully rebuilt 2 different times since this ballpark opened. In 2013 when they sold off everyone and then when this new ownership group came and they traded Yelich, Ozuna, Stanton, and JT. Just because they are incompetent and cheap and picked the wrong players consistently doesnt mean it wasnt a full rebuild.

They are doing absolutely nothing different now compared to those rebuilds. I heard the same crock of shit when jeter first got here about building through the draft and IFA and creating "waves of talent" through the minors. We heard for multiple years about the academy they built in the dominican. It's just a distraction so that they can try to justify spending like a minor league organization. It is also a load of bullshit. Building through the draft and IFA and spending like a major league organization are not mutually exclusive propositions. some of the best, highest spending teams in the league also now have the best farm systems in baseball too. the days of teams like the rays building through the draft and the highest spending teams only utilizing free agency have been over for years. There is 0 justification for not getting this payroll to $100 million at the very least. That's not even close to being a middle of the pack payroll, and we arent even close to that pathetic number. There is no reason why they cant spend intelligently on the fringes while also rebuilding and developing talent in the minors.

Their major league roster is completely unwatchable, has been completely gutted, and they really STILL dont have a single cant miss prospect coming in the system.

He's not spot on at all. they dont get to use their current roster construction as an excuse to not spend. Their current roster construction sucks because they havent spent in the past and Bendix blew up the team over the last year. It is a self fulfilling prophecy. If you continue to not spend, you will never draft and sign IFA well enough only to build a winning team. You can make 2 signings for legitimate major league bats to improve your team. You can sign a competent starter or 2 to raise the floor of your young and injury prone pitchers. Especially now with a draft lottery, there is no incentive to be as terrible as possible. you just saw how it worked out to waste an entire year bottoming out for the 7th pick in the draft. And to justify this bullshit is pathetic from a fan perspective. You can focus on building a farm and spending in IFA while ALSO spending like a legitimate organization. Every single team does it.

And his whole notion that this is a novel, new concept for this team in a rebuild over the last 10-12 years is just nonsense. Literally all jeter would talk about is waves of talent, rebuilding the organization from the bottom up, drafting well, spending in IFA, building a complex in the dominican, and developing talent. It is the same fucking thing 5 years later. Now they are just using phrases like organizational infrastructure and analytics department more often. Just because they did it poorly previously doesnt mean this is a new concept for this team in a rebuild. And their choice to tear the team down and rebuild does not give them cover for spending less than 70 million on payroll, much of which is going to guys not even on the team. You can both rebuild and field a more competent roster by spending at even a bottom 10 payroll as opposed to the lowest in the league. There should be no one in that ballpark until this changes or he sells the team. Continuing to support this is a joke. Trying to figure out how to build a winning team on a low payroll is fun for a few years. It's not fun after 30 years.

To turn us into a contender, none. But sure there are things they could've done to get more butts in the seats, and then to also to give them trade ammunition at the deadline. One or two year deals to raise the talent of the club, to then turn that into future assets.

The Marlins actually did something. They signed Cal Quantrill. Not a needle mover, but not actually a terrible move it looks like on the surface.

Cal quantrill is a good signing. That’s the kind of move I would like to see more of and should be expected. A move doesn’t have to turn the team into a contender to be worth it. Raise the floor, build some depth, and maybe get a good year and sell him at the deadline. They need 1 more arm like that and 1-2 more bats like that. Yeah. Seems like someone who could raise their value, and be a potential trade deadline piece. At the very least, he should be an innings eater for a team that badly needed one last year. Hopefully there’s more to come.
