  • the new mish/jackson article makes it sound like garcia will be on the opening day roster. They are "optimistic" he can return to some semblance of his time in milwaukee because he has showed up in good shape apparently. would be hilarious if he goes full Soler and bounces back. Probably worth noting he had a really good year in tampa in 2019

If Edwards is down until May 20th something, it's a year of control. I do wonder if that is factored into the equation.

So this would basically be giving him 75-100 PA to figure it out as he wouldn't be playing too much, and if he's real bad they could kick the tires on Mancini before the inevitable shift to Edwards. Garcia was a -.3 WAR player in just over 100 PA last year, so the season isn't going to be made or broken with this decision even if utterly uninspiring.

      • There is a puff piece mention in the Herald that Skip really likes Soriano and can see a high leverage pen role. Which makes sense at least for the RP aspect as maybe a multi inning bridge guy to Scott and Nardi. But I can't see a dedicated role with the innings needed.

The best innings vision I can foresee is this:

        Luzardo - 170
Garrett - 150 due to injury
        Eury, Cabrera - 140 each
        Rogers - 130
        Puk, Weathers - 110 each
        Scott - 70
Nardi, Bender, Chargois - 60 each
        Sixto - 50
        Soriano/Hoeing/McCaughan/Brazoban/Faucher/Munoz/Cronin/Guitterez/Monteverde Optionpalooza - 180
        =1440

They'll need 150-300 injury replacement innings, so then Max is a 50-60 IP replacement further in the year (I'm anticipating half his innings at MLB level), and other innings inventory for this clump is stretching out Weathers more (he could throw more if he can handle it), and counting on that last batch to handle more of a load. That last grouping is going to throw 300 innings easily is what I am saying here. Three hundred. Optimistically half of that is pure garbage time so it doesn't matter much (Sixto is probably garbage time too though you know), but this is effectively a full time heavy usage SP over the course of the season here where they'll be relying on probably Soriano for half of it in spurts and the others for the other half. Like how Hoeing surprisingly got 70 MLB innings last year, etc.

Not great, but they better be right those guys can handle some real innings if they don't bring in someone else. Or if it all falls apart in August and who cares and let the back half of the 40 man rip and see what happens. I just found it interesting they are playing up Soriano. Makes more sense without Sixto, but I guess that's a good problem if he is finding himself.

        • i like what i saw from Soriano last year. I dont think he is a backend guy but i like him as a multi inning middle reliever with the capability of starting if needed. I can see him in a role similar to Badenhop.

          • Sixto gave up one hit (infield swinging bunt) in another good outing. Hit 96 mph

Gonna be interesting how they handle him. They can’t send him down so they either have to try to sneak him on the il or just carry him and see what happens or just lose him. Someone will likely claim him I would think

              • Also, mish said we had discussions with jd Martinez but nothing actively brewing. He’d be interesting but it feels like if you add him you have to deal dlc. Between dlc, jd, burger, and bell, that’s too many guys who shouldn’t be in the field.

                • I thought Burger was just fine at 3B for us last year, do the stats back that up? Bell is definitely not a great 1B, but he's not a disaster either.

                  • Burger didn’t seem terrible, bell should for sure be a dh though. Not that he was making mistakes all over the place, he just had 0 range to get to balls. He plays the field like he has ankle weights on

                      DLC has an option

3rd percentile statcast. Burger needs to be a 1B/DH for 90+ games for sure.

3B is going to be like 70 Berti / 50 Brujan / 40 Burger or so probably. Which I think is fine assuming Tim is good enough

                        • Berti at 3B for 70 games will definitely be interesting with him double (and sometimes triple) clutching before he throws. Gonna be a lotta bang bang plays at 1B.

They’ll have to trade something here for sure but I’d be all over this one. That being said these guys didn’t spend $1.5m on Urshela so who knows

I’m imagining Brujan is starting another 30+ games elsewhere so if he takes off it could be a Brujan 90 / Burger 40 / Berti 30 real quick FWIW as you can play Berti elsewhere, etc.

But I imagine Berti gets the most starts here if we’re truly thinking Burger is getting around 90-100 games at DH/1B. I don’t have much confidence in Brujan but maybe he goes full prospect/AAA slash and surprises.
