It's better than nothing, my hopes of something better materializing at SS had long since passed, so this probably was the best option at this very moment. Just wish we operated like a real organization.
I’d like to see us sign one more righty reliever but I doubt it. If Anderson can be anywhere close to where he was a few years ago, I don’t disagree that we are better than we were opening day last year.
I said it when soler signed, but I would put money on Anderson finishing with a higher war than him this year. Overall, we improved the areas we needed to improve other than the bullpen. Is it enough of an improvement, idk, but Anderson is better than wendle and Betancourt is better than stallings.

Agreed, a real organization would have done this plus attacked the bullpen to try to make up for the loss of Sandy and the innings limits
The sixto story is just so crazy. Top prospect, traded for top catcher in baseball, electric debut, completely disappears for 3 straight years, now apparently in the 90s again? Would be an absurd story. I’ve read his off speed stuff looks awful though so we shall see.thats not exactly unexpected after such a long time off. I’d bet that they il him again to start the year to give him some minor league reps.
i do wonder if we will ever get the full story on what the fuck happened to him the last several years
Yep. They'll have to do that as he is OOO. If he shows anything, someone like the As, Rockies, or White Sox will grab him and make him a garbage time arm just to see if they can keep him healthy. I can't imagine the Marlins, who think they can contend, would keep him around on the MLB roster absent unusual circumstances where he just clicks.
This is roughly $94m (if they DFA Garcia and keep both of DLC/Edwards, just call it $95m)
C Fortes, Bethancourt
1B Bell
2B Arraez, Brujan
SS Anderson
3B Burger, Berti
LF Gordon, DLC/Edwards (other in AAA)
RF Jazz
CF Sanchez, Garcia
SP Luzardo, Eury, Garrett, Cabrera, Rogers
B-RP Puk, Weathers, Soriano
HL-RP Scott, Nardi, ______
RP Chargois, Brazoban
(I'm figuring out some short hand for bulk, high leverage, and ordinary rp)
IL - Sandy
AAA - Bender (MLB salary)
Dead - Barnes, Cueto
I agree with Fish16 a good RHP reliever would round out the team for what it is, and Meyer and Bender can be built up to be internal upgrades presumably later. They could easily do that sub $100m at this point, way less than last year on the field with potentially upwards of $25m not on the field with Sandy, Garcia, Barnes, and Cueto. I'd keep Berti though for now with that team above even if Edwards is getting shipped to AAA, and just sign Stanek or whoever as the budget it low.
In a perfect "Bruce" world of matching last year's team payroll, they could probably fit in something like Lorenzen, R. Stanek, and Urshela onto this team for $110m DFA'ing Garcia and optioning Brazoban down.

It's unspectacular, but that'll make up some big innings and another veteran bat would be helpful.
I think Berti is a little more expendable in this situation where you could just keep DLC and Edwards up with the club, and maybe Berti then becomes a RP to replace Soriano (with his money helping to sign Lorenzen/Urshela/Stanek etc). Backup SS time would be scary, but maybe you just trust Tim to be much better and last year was an injury flub. Now you have some real legitimate depth with Meyer, Bender, Soriano, Brazoban, and Hoeing (Sixto?) in AAA and we all likely wouldn't be insulted if any of them opened with the club as a last 1-2 arm. High floor replacement innings there. Pray to god Scott and Nardi are top 20 RP again and make games 7 innings, and that Arraez and Jazz are super pissed they lost their arb cases and go bananas with post-hype Brujan/Gordon athlete explosions.
That team ain't bad for $110m. Frustrating that at $135m (bottom 18 payroll or so) Snell or Montgomery could be outright added to that versus Soriano on that team above, but what can you do with Bruce.
Anyways, glad they finally did anything but some innings and another bat even if cheap ones would be highly valuable to raise the floor.
This is a nice move. Worst case scenario it’s another Segura, but throwing $5M away shouldn’t really be some kind of horrible outcome. If he regains his form, he’ll either help the Marlins contend, or net us something at the deadline. Apparently Burger vouched for him, and many White Sox fans seem to suggest he wasn’t a clubhouse problem.
Now, go get another bat, another RP, and maybe even trade a pitcher to bolster the system and we should feel a lot better about the offseason.
And if we're looking for the glimmer of hope. Statcast says Tim should have hit .258/.299/.341 (.640) last year, and has been noted he had an early injury and was banged up all year. That's a far cry from his actual .582 OPS.
He was a 2 WAR player (351 PA) in 2022 with .734 OPS. That's a big jump from his actual performance last year, but if that's who Tim is now versus the 2019-2021 three year run of excellence, he could be pretty OK in a Berti kind of way just plugging along unspectacularly with a high .600/low .700 OPS and playing just enough defense.
He's a fine bet for $5m, this just absolutely can't be the big move coming off the playoffs but I think we have all beaten that Bruce horse to death.
My guess is Berti slides into the role they originally envisioned for Urshela (He plays 3rd and with Burger at DH or he plays 2nd, Arraez at 1st, and Bell DHs). I assume Edwards goes to AAA and then assumes the role next year or after Berti is traded.
At this point, I would think they platoon DLC and Gordon in Left and Sanchez/Avi in Right unless Avi continues to be unplayable. At the very least they have a lot of options…hopefully a few of the bounce back candidates actually bounce back.

I think this is likely, with them adding a cheap veteran RP only. Even if they really need 150+ innings still, as well as at least 500 upgraded PA somewhere and that's being generous.
They also open with a very manageable series schedule FWIW.
And then it gets a bit more difficult. They can probably coast with this with an eye to summer trades + Max/Bender built back up. I'd really like to see 2-3 more Lorenzen, Urshela, Duvall, M. Taylor, Stanke, Clevinger (bulk role), etc. guys brought in.
Urshela goes to Detroit for 1 year at $1.5 million. I would’ve definitely taken him at that price, although I’m not sure he was really necessary given the amount of utility players on the roster. If they were really interested in him to play 3rd, I wonder if they would try to get Evan Longeria on a minor league deal given his Rays connection.
With players going off the board now on cheap 1 year deals, they really should be trying to replace Soler’s power with JD Martinez or Adam Duvall. Probably unlikely though since it seems like they are going to give Avi another shot.
