I don't disagree with the rest of what you said, though.
Her job would have still been GM, and the way Mish described it was that her day to day responsibilities would essentially be the same. I suppose it’s kind of a demotion if she doesn’t have final say on every area of the front office, but I’m not sure she earned that.

There had been talk all along that there were parts of the job she wasn’t really ready to handle. I’m not sure having someone come in to oversee that stuff should have been taken as some kind of big slight, but she is entitled to feel that way. The big takeaway from me, though, is the Marlins are better off with the front office they have now than the one they had at this time last year.

FB velocity down, has been hurt, and going to make close to $7m in arbitration. He’s a pass for me absent amazing medical coming out. Cleveland is smart. They are keeping him for that price if they believed in him at all. Thats a solid RP level of money.

His fastball velocity was higher last year than it was the year before. Compare to 2 years ago it was down half a mph. I shouldn’t have said claim, I meant sign once he clears. He can eat some innings and has some upside

The track record of the rays front office and player development system compared to whatever the hell we have been doing for the last 5 years combined with the building blocks we already have combined with how fucking terrible ng was with in season roster moves.

yes we made the playoffs and the trades were great for burger and bell, but we were an incredibly lucky team last year. You play that same season 100 times we miss the playoffs the vast majority of the time

              • You can tout the Rays success all you want, and speculate on how big a part of that success this guy was. This is the first time he’ll be running the show. I’m not saying he’ll be bad, I’m saying I don’t know and neither does anybody else on this board.

Yea might be worth a flyer once he clears if he is healthy. He’s their Brian Anderson.

on a 1 year cheap deal or 2 year team friendly deal he makes a lot of sense combined with 1 more higher profile SP addition for this year. He pitched 186 really good innings in 2022 and just got hurt this past year but he came back in september and was really good. In a worst case scenario he can eat innings in the back of the rotation. In the best case scenario we sign 1 starter and we get health from guys like rogers and Meyer and he can become a multi inning righty reliever weapon that can spot start if needed which we need anyways.

Feels like he has been around forever to me but he was picked with the pick right after braxton garrett in the 2016 draft.

                    • I've been pondering the Troy Johnston dump. Offensively, he was identical to Dane Myers at JAX last season (amazingly so!) and is beyond a tender age at 26 (Myers is 27). He was also showing continual improvement, esp. in the power category. Defensively, his glove was far less functional than Myers and was limited to first base. Johnston is probably a replacement level guy and not a whole lot more. It's also probably no better than a 50/50 shot that Myers sticks with the big league team out of spring training.

HOWEVER, we can't feel too certain that Josh Bell (for $13.5M) will provide much more than Troy as a LHB and first base/DH. Before putting together a solid second half last season, Bell was a huge disappointment in San Diego and Cleveland. Bell is likely to be replacement level IMO. So ... I would have protected Johnston, mostly because of his continued growth and the fact that the 40-man had plenty of room. Side note: I don't know why Mesa Jr. was protected or why Nunez was not. Nunez' speed and defense are off the charts and he gets on base despite the low average.

How did dane myers do at the MLB level once he stopped dominating AAA? These guys you fall in love with are AAAA players, and you never seem to realize it until it's too late, and by that time you've moved onto the next 28 year old dominating AAA.

Josh bell is an 8 year veteran with a career OPS of .800 exactly, an OBP of .347, and a slugging of .453, with a wrc+ of 114. Neither of those 2 guys will come close to Bell's production. If Bell is replacement level, it's because they are trying to force him at 1b instead of just letting him DH everyday.

Nunez wasnt added because he cant fucking hit and has negative power. He's going to make Adeiny Hechavarria look like Barry bonds if he ever gets to the major league level.

                        • I still like Nunez. I'm ok with him not being protected because I think the chances of him being taken are relatively low. He's nowhere near being ready from an offensive standpoint, it's possible some terrible team just stashes him for a year, but unlikely. If Soler is gone and we don't replace his offense somehow at DH/OF then Troy Johnston would've been a useful player come even as early as opening day. I still don't get that one.

We're going to judge Myers, who converted from pitching to hitting just a couple years ago, on sixty or so at bats at the major league level? I'm certainly not. He's on an upward trajectory that may or may not pan out. He's certainly hitting in the winter league and like Johnston he's a top performer in the Marlins system.

                            • I still like Dane Myers too btw. Hitting well in the Dominican League right now. He held his own in his first Major League ABs. I think he'll be a big contributor next year.

you lecturing anyone on sample sizes is pretty rich. He will be 28 years old on opening day. He is a backup OF or AAAA player. He's a nice story, but he doesnt have the plate discipline. If he turns into a 4th or 5th OF thats a huge find.
