  • Olbermann: Given Marlins' mess, Rays are a goner

One theory about the Marlins' latest breakup is that it will have a negative impact on the Rays' efforts to get a new stadium, as government officials and fans will be even less likely to consider any public support.

Keith Olbermann, on his mlb.com Baseball Nerd blog, says the fallout goes further, that it means the Rays are done not only in St. Petersburg but in Florida and are destined to move. Olbermann, who has held various network sports and news broadcast jobs, is a major baseball fan, and portrays himself as something of an insider. And, for what it's worth, he has some connection to Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg, and was a guest of Rays officials at a game at Yankee Stadium in September.

    Writes Olbermann:

Rays’ owner Stu Sternberg was already less than sanguine about getting significant scratch from the state and local governments for a new ballpark that is absolutely essential to his survival in Tampa/St. Petersburg. If he had any hopes left after the disastrously low crowds for the free ballpark the good burghers of Florida gave Jeffrey Loria, they have to be gone now and he has to be looking elsewhere.

    Later, Olbermann writes:

But the biggest long-term implications are fairly simple: the franchise carousel, all but quiet since the upheaval of the 1953-72 era, will begin to spin again.

It's really interesting to think how this really does fuck the Rays. Hard core. Tampa won't let what's happened here, happen there. So if we follow the yellow brick road and the Rays leave...

Marlins will overnight get the Florida TV market and become top 3(?) in Media Market in baseball and TV contract revenue.

I really hope Loria isn't around when this inevitably happens.

    • I said to mclevin yesterday, if you're Beinfest/Hill and Loria comes to your office and says "I want everyone making money gone," wouldn't you sooner quit than make the deal? I mean unless something absolutely miraculous happens and they win 80+ games this year this is career suicide for Beinfest, no? Wouldn't it be better to have quit after a year in which the team universally underachieved based on everyone's expectations as opposed to gutting the team and getting nothing?

      • I'm pretty sure they passed on D'Arnaud because they view Brantly as their starting catcher. No need to clog up the position.

This is easily the most ridiculous thing that you have ever said.

Beinfest will be able to tell all future employers Loria was a lunatic and I did what I did because I had too. Likewise, no guy that high up on a baseball team is quitting. Dream job even if mired in shit.

His career suicide is if Yelich/fernandez/2010/2011 drafts don't work out and all future teams see a complete 7 year black hole of drafting record besides Stanton and 1 season of Coghlan.

            • Also I was on MLB Network Radio this morning with Jeff Nelson and Todd Hollandsworth. Plugged the site, of course, but they were asking how much of this had to do with the stadium, how fans were feeling, if/how it could be repaired (I said Loria had to go), etc

In all seriousness, if any of them resign, they're unlikely to get a job in baseball ever again (other than Jennings). I don't think anyone's "star" has fallen farther than Hill/Beinfest as people around the country are starting to realize what a disaster they've been since 2007.

                  • Well now, sure. But prior to this deal I'd imagine they'd at least be able to say that Loria was a nut job. Their hands are just as covered in blood as Loria's now. The return is incredibly subpar.

                    • They'd definitely still get jobs somewhere. They won't get the high positions they have now but I have no doubt that they'd find a team that would give them some baseball ops position. That's how it works in that business.

                      • Plus I've seen several "experts" say the return is fine from a baseball perspective. We disagree, but not everyone hates the trade when you eliminate the outside factors.

Obviously from an evaluation standpoint, you can't eliminate them, but from another owner's point of view, who knows he wouldn't demand a salary dump like this, you certainly can eliminate them.

                          • The Rays have shown themselves to be a well organized and ran franchise. They buy out arbitration and free agent years and tend to maximize value on trades and in the draft. I would hope in their eventual stadium deal that people in power are able to look at the Rays in a vacuum without taking Loria and the Marlins into account. Two entirely different ownership and management mindsets.

                            • The Rays maximized value in the draft when they were picking first second or third every year

Say what you want about them, but there is no way any of them think Brantley's star is ahead of D'Arnoud's
