Well to be honest St. Louis was mostly privately funded, and San Francisco was I believe 100% privately funded. I don't know about Minnesota & Philadelphia. I think also both NY stadiums had mostly private financing.

The trend based on that has been to have more private funding in stadiums than public money.

On top of that, this stadium was approved of and built during the worst economy in this country in the last 80 years. Those were all planned and started during relatively good times.

        • What the fuck does "under water" even mean because they sure as hell can't be losing money.

They also said that they were underwater before the stadium was built, and then we found out they were making roughly $ 40 million a year.

I don't now and won't ever believe a word they say. Loria is just a lying douchbag.

              • I bet Loria is pretty close to making players rent out their lockers and pay for their own uniforms.

They didn't lose money last year as they actually got the 2011 revenue sharing money.

Now this year will be threadbare, as they won't get that revenue sharing for 2012. So they must have shred as much salary because their income was severely cut for 2013 (no 2012 rev sharing).

But at what expense ? Their reputations and credibility are gone for good. I guess Loria thinks that if he throws money at a free agent he will get who he wants. Sorry but that will not happen again. Baseball players are smarter than that.

They really aren't. You give players too much credit. Most of them just want the money.

                      • What an amazing villian Jeff Loria is. I still can't believe this is happening.

Is there a more despised owner in professional sports and a more laughed at organization by the rest of the country?

                        • I dunno, Donald Sterling was pretty hated

Also, the more I think about it, the more I think this is all about putting the team up for sale

still don't know why the Marlins didn't get anyone really cool back from Toronto, but that's a different kind of anger

I'm thinking (and hoping) this too.

I think the fact that they traded essentially the whole team to Toronto but failed to get Toronto's top prospect speaks volumes about Loria not caring about the organizations future competitiveness.

This has to be the set up for a sale.

The official site says the Marlins are working on a deal to "revamp their roster".

                            • I really, really hope this means the team is going up for sale.

                              Enough is enough.

                              • Might be giving Loria too much credit as the villain if he didn't even try to get D'Arnoud.

I just can't believe Beinfest would sabotage himself (and Mike Hill) like this, but maybe they're still respected on the management front.
