We can read but you chose not to bold that portion.

      Standings on June 19, 2003:

35-39 (.473), 13 games back in the division, 8.5 back of the wild card

then we called up Miguel Cabrera

The 2013 team doesnt have comparable pieces, overall, to the 2003 team.

          That's probably not true.

I think it likely is true.

2013 might have a better bullpen than the 03 team that's about it.

03 team had better rotation for sure, especially depth wise. And maybe 3 of our 2013 position players (Reyes, Stanton, LoMo maybe) woulda started for that 03 team.

              Well.

Mark Redman was pretty consistently mediocre before that season. Pavano sucked before that season. Penny was mediocre prior.

Beckett was a big prospect, but he hadn't proved himself + injuries.

And Dontrelle was basically what Jose Fernandez is now, but not as elite as Fernandez.

The rotation ended up being excellent, but it wasn't expected to be as good as it was.

                Where would LoMo have started?

In LF pre-Cabs (as was the condition of the statement)

I feel comfortable with LoMo > Hollandsworth

This is what I was going to say.

2003 turned out nicely, but it's not as if the projected core of that team heading into the year >>> the projected core of the team heading into 2013.

If anything, the bigger difference now is that the division is tougher. Now, you have a good idea that the Nats and Braves are going to be good and the Phillies still have Hamels, Lee, Halladay as their top-3 in the rotation, which always projects to be competitive. In 2002-2003, it was just the Braves we had to worry about.

Everyone but the Mets finished over .500 in 2003. Philly was 86-76 and Montreal was 83-79.

Those might have been surprises too, I don't remember.

The reality is the Marlins are in a loaded division, with the Braves, Phillies, Mets and Expos oozing much more talent than this club. The offseason moves, cosmetic as they may seem, were really done with one huge thing in mind -- finances.

Dan Le Batard called the Pudge signing "Putting lipstick on a corpse."

                        He knows baseball.
