Likewise, the idea of signing a Schwarber becomes extremely skeptical if we assume Sanchez and Bleday are going to play. Someone will have to DH.

All roads go back to being all-in on a centerfielder. And ideally, two of them and have one of them also be able to play in the IF (cough Ketel). That's the moves.
Forget Schwarber - get a true CF and try for one of the bigger infield names.

    • agreed we need a CF but if for some reason they do go for another corner OF/DH type, out of all the guys we've talked about I want schwarber. that's the type of impact great hitter that this team desperately needs right now. The dude can flat out rake. Awful defensively but if that's your DH that can make up for a lot of the deficiencies we might have in other areas. My only concern and the reason I think I could see it not happening is how many lefties that would give us in the middle of the lineup the next few years. Jazz, Sanchez, Schwarber, Lewin, Bleday, plus Conine is also a lefty if he pans out. To me that's something that will sort himself out and if they are all good hitters who even cares, but I could see that as a reason for not signing him as opposed to another similar righty

      • Did Burdick play exclusively CF in AA this year? Letting both Scott and Misner go, do they see Burdick playing CF by mid season?

Burdick and Bleday basically switched off every day between playing CF and corner OF in AA. From the reports I heard, Burdick looked better in CF of the 2.

          • The Marlins were reportedly in talks with Michael Conforto's camp before the lockout.

                • conforto would be my ideal addition as of now if you assume we're out on correa and bryant. He probably would want a shorter deal to bounce back, his down year last year would make him a good value if he were to bounce back, and he's young and can reasonably be expected to improve. Granted, I still have no damn idea what their plan for CF would be, but he is a tremendous hitter and he gets on base a lot historically and would be a phenomenal addition.

I'd rather have Garret Cooper (as he would replace those PA) and the $8-10m to sign something else. It's a long way from phenomenal, absent them running a $120m+ payroll where luxury upgrades like this sure

Phenomenal is getting TWO centerfielders and one of them can also play in the IF so they don't have to carry a whatever backup IF.

                    Stallings, Fortes
                    Aguilar, Cooper
                    Jazz
                    Rojas, Wendle
                    Anderson
                    Sanchez, DLC
                    ______, ______
                    Garcia

Blast is all out for Ketel and Caleb Smith (Meyer/Watson), also trade for Marsh (Pablo), and then sign a real veteran SP to log innings with Sandy, Rogers, Luzardo, Cabrera, Elisier, and Caleb. And imagine that SP is Carlos Rodon, and they also address the bullpen with another luxury arm. That's phenomenal.

                    • Conforto isn’t the impact outfielder this team needs.

Aka right where we started lol.

They need to make a big signing and not worry about the money.

Yea, it's low a bit on Sanchez, Jazz, and Garcia, but overall it probably is only 1-2 wins low on a team projection.

I've been thinking on/off of what they should do and I think my current "realistic" best case scenario is:

Meyer, Elisier, and Bass for someone like Marsh or Kelenic (and another prospect or two). This lowers payroll around $3m bucks, and they get real longterm hope in CF. It's buying low on a top prospect who struggled in their first call up. Angels and Mariners both need the pitching IMO. Especially the Angels.

Then, you get Keirmaier or Hicks by absorbing 75% of their contract for nothing notable in return. It's a salary dump. Both of those guys project as 2 WAR players next year over a full season. It's a decent platoon with Marsh/Kelenic, and your 4th OF is then really good so it trickles up production wise. I think these two CF moves adds 3 wins to the team, and nothing is lost in pitching as Sixto/Cabrera/Luzardo/Head/Holloway can handle whatever Elisier/Meyer/Head were going to throw.......plus

Payroll is now around $70 million and they should be able to add an arm. This is where you go big - Carlos Rodon or someone like Bryant (trade/DFA one of Aguilar or Cooper if Bryant). That team fits under $90m more than likely and you've added another 3+ wins. Ideally, do that and sign Kenley/luxury arm on top of this, and you're under $100m. That team then looks great. Even better if you upgrade last man on the bench too (which would be Berti or DLC).

This gets them to June for sure, and if things look good, still have trade assets to move for whatever. Watson, Eury, Bleday, Fulton, Burdick, I. Lewis, Salas, Cappe, Morisette, etc. all still around, and the 22 picks are good ones.

Slow offseason now. The possibilities are endless. I wonder how they'll mess it up this time.

                              • BA has a new updated top 100:

                                Eury (48)
                                Watson (60)
                                Sixto (64)
                                Cabrera (69)
                                Meyer (74)

I don't have a subscription, but looking at commentary looks like Eder would have been in if not injured so he's probably back half if he comes back healthy. Doesn't seem like Bleday's AFL lifted him.

I think the "problem" here is it seems like Sixto has some conditioning concerns, so he's likely not a viable trade candidate. The Marlins definitely need Cabrera right now as most MLB ready. Meyer isn't ranked enough for a centerpiece (but a fantastic 2nd piece in a superstar deal). So if we're talking Ketel, I'm not sure how you get around Eury + Watson as the core deal (probably with like Burdick/Fulton and an outside top 20 guy throw in). Other teams will have better prospects than Eury/Watson to throw in (likely more MLB ready too), so the Marlins will need to go for it if they want a guy like that.

                                Would it be worth it?
Especially when you have a $65m payroll and only need 3-4 players to fill out the team?
And two of those are middle bullpen and "Jon Berti" upgrades (e.g., cheap) so we're really talking 2 expensive players and 2 backups?

Basically, they may need to move Pablo for a big CF and trust Elisier/Luzardo/Cabrera/Sixto. Plus maybe a free agent arm on top.

Maybe FG and others will rank them higher so we can get into eye of the beholder situations.

They can clear $14million-ish in payroll and get to around $55 if they move Pablo, Aguilar, and Bass. If they'd go to $90m in payroll, they could fit in Bryant (FA), Keirmaier/Hicks (nominal trade, absorb their salary), Marsh/Kelenic (Pablo/Bass), and probably have $5m to spend on another arm. That's maintaining the entire farm, and likely adding a FV45 guy or two as a second piece in the Pablo deal.

They are going to have to do something like that if Meyer/Eury/Watson aren't top 30 prospects.
