That doesn't mean that you let go of someone who could potentially fill the spot for a washed up 36-year old with no upside.
It's not as if we're better off now.
Also, if you let go of Dominguez for nothing and then trade your actual 3B, it's probably a good idea to make sure there are potential replacements down the line, no? Now, according to reports, they want a power bat at 3B because...well, who doesn't? The free agent 3B suck.
The point is, if you really think you're a buyer, fine. Get a good player to improve your team. Don't trade a prospect with the potential to be something for a player who doesn't even improve your team at all. Carlos Lee sucks.

Also, it's rather premature to say that he's "not very good" and holds no value to any organization's future. He's currently performing now, scouts have always loved his defense, and his power #'s were not that bad at several levels in the minors. He can be a nice 3B (not superstar) for a big league team.
He's better than what we currently have.
Had he been here, I would still hope the FO would look for a replacement during the off season.

Perhaps "rather strong" is a poor way of assessing it, but it's a lot better than...well, nothing now.

I don't think it's a "horizontal move."

If you agree that we would have been doing this:
"WE HAVE TO GET A THIRD BASEMAN THIS OFFSEASON!!!"
then losing Dominguez wasn't really any sort of a deal at all.
You could make a case that Matt Dominguez has more upside than the free agent 3B available this offseason. That's the problem.
If there were a bunch of 3B available, whatever. Point is, there aren't.
They could've at least signed a 3B and let Dominguez try to earn a spot in Spring Training.
Citing his minor league .OPS as the only way to evaluate him/say he's not very good is somewhat unfair.
Just last year, we were saying that if he could put up the #'s he was putting up offensively, he'd be a + for us because his defense would be very valuable. The perception about a young player changes that much over half a season in the minor leagues now? He's done?

Just like Chris Seddon never ended up getting us King Felix, we can't trade shit for gold.

They're both guys that people on here thought we could trade for players that were out of their leagues.
Are those not comparable situations?
Or are you doing that thing where only exact duplicate situations can be compared?
If that's the thing we're doing, I can just wait until you make any comparison ever and tell you multiple ways in which they can be torn down despite the fact that those aren't the ways in which you are making the comparison.
