I mean, they basically had to decide between committing long-term to one or the other, correct?

By 2008 they were so far into Cabrera's service clock that it wasn't a choice. If they were smart (and we know they're not) the Marlins easily could have kept both. Miggy should have been bought out after the '05 firesale, Hanley after 2007's I may be better than Miggy routine.
The only link, really, is that they were teammates and seemed destined for the HoF, other than that one has very little to do with the other.
--------------------
Or, looking at it another way, if the 2007 offseason featured a Hanley trade instead of a Miggy trade, there's still no way the Marlins were going to give Miggy the 7 year deal SFX was asking for to make him forgo free agency post 2009.

Saying that, as I have developed this Beinfest gets strike one for 06-11, and strike two for 2012 season, theory.
Not buying out Stanton this offseason is strike 3. I am done with this front office if they don't get it done.

Its not rocket science, Colorado already did the work
Carlos Gonzalez of
7 years/$80M (2011-17)
7 years/$80M (2011-17)
signed extension with Colorado 1//11/11
$3M signing bonus
11:$1M, 12:$5M, 13:$7.5M, 14:$10.5M, 15:$16M, 16:$17M, 17:$20M
$1M assignment bonus if traded

I'd imagine the payroll reason is why 06-11 counts as one strike. His hands were pretty much tied, they were not this year.
I've seen JCR say many times that he doesn't think they'll buy him out till after 2013. That is going to piss me off big time.Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

But at the same time, what if
-Beinfest wanted to buyout Cabrera, and Loria said no. Causing his eventual trade from organization.
-Beinfest gets his manager and not Girardi (who blew out JJ, Anibal, and Nolasco in my opinion by mismanagement)
-Beinfest has middle of the pack payroll to patch a few holes and not Abercrombie-it
-Beinfest does not have to skimp on draft slot and can go after a few 'better' guys
-Beinfest is allowed to trade Hanley sooner
-Beinfest does not sign Buck and Bell
This is a Loria hit list here. I mean, we don't really know, but I think the writing is on the wall about a lot of those moves. Can we crucify the dude for these massive decisions if the owner is playing the cards? How different would things be with even half of those things changed?
That's why I think he gets another shot. He has until July 31, 2013 to get within 5 games of the wild card. I'm not opposed to this. Unless of course they don't sign Stanton. Then they are dead to me.

Woah woah woah, let's slow down.
Oliver Perez came back from the exact same rain delay that JJ did in '06 and didn't suffer serious injury. That's such a lame excuse that someone caused him to become fragile. A strong gust of wind could injure him. Anibal was already dealing with serious non-specific nerve damage with Boston before the Marlins acquired him. Ricky has yet to go on the DL. But yeah, tailor any narrative you want.
Also, lou, why do you give a shit about the Stanton extension? The Hanley one got him an extra 3 months with the team. Whoopedy fucking doo. Under Loria, the Marlins have agreed to 3 "long-term" contracts (5 years or more guaranteed because, in theory, 10/5 rights could vest in the course of the deal) - Delgado, Hanley, and Reyes. Two were traded before the contract concluded and the third is in year one. Extending Stanton means shit with this group.Last edited by Swifty; 08-12-2012, 02:39 AM.
