I totally agree...I just don't see it happening. Especially since the past 2 years, they have been able to close game with Romo and Kintzler while paying them under $3 million. It could be them being cheap...or maybe they just don't think spending big on a closer is the best way to use their resources. Likely it's both.

I just hoped that making the playoffs last year, and the bullpen being a clear weakness against the braves. (Who basically stocked up on relievers on short-term deals in free agency, and had arguably the best pen in the bigs) I thought maybe that might lead to spending some money on 1-year deals for some better relievers.

To me, we needed to do three things in this offseason. 1. Get a power bat 2. Address the Catching Position 3. And improve the bullpen.

They just did #1, they haven't done #2 yet, and they're I'd say halfway to doing #3, but they need a legit closer (not another Kintzler) to get all the way there.

Agree. They have added to the bullpen (Bass, Cimber, Detwiler, 2 Rule 5 lottery tickets), but they certainly need 1 more experienced back end arm.

Catcher was always going to be the toughest to address.

        • The lack of spending on small pieces on 1-year deals is annoying but after a pandemic-filled year with 0 revenue from ticket sales, I can't say it was totally unexpected. It's gonna be a ridiculous year for team payrolls. As of now payrolls as a whole across the league look like late 2000s level. The Indians for christ's sake have a payroll in the '30s. I still think we will add 1 more decent sized arm. The market is just too good in terms of value for relievers. I think there will be an arm or 2 that comes available for a minor league deal. Hell, Kintzler and Cishek signed minor league deals in the last 24 hours.

          • beinintendi about to be traded according to morosi. he says royals are the frontrunner. will be interesting to see the package they get for him and what it would be compared to in our system. would appear we are clearly out after getting duvall

              • on another note, keith law had great things to say about our organization in his rankings. he has us 4th, baseball America has us 11th.

                • that return for benintendi makes a lot more sense now as to why we were after him. that's a very light return for a clear good bat who, while more expensive due to his arbitration/free agency proximity, has a huge upside as a former #1 prospect in all of baseball not too long ago. i have a friend who was in the red sox organization before last year who says the guy actually hates baseball but still, id take the upside of benintendi for that price.

Marlins are in on lots of RP thing is most are pretty much what Kintzler got from Philly MILB deal with 2 or 3 million if make team

Jeffries/Kela/Phelps/Rosenthal/Robertson/Clippard/Petit/Romo/Workman ALL guy Miami is into. 1 will get a ML deal watch but like every other year the rest have to decide between a Milb deal from Miami or a Milb from LA/NYY/NYM/Washington and we know who wins 99% of the time

1 of Rosenthal,Jefferess or Kela will get the ML deal while Miami signs 2 or 3 very solid RP to Milb with invite deals!!!

FWIW I’m hearing Marlins probably are going to sign another RP. They still feel there is a pen upgrade out there. I thought maybe the Kintzler offer was the end of it but apparently not.

Ya liked mentioned at least 1 gets a ML deal. Jeffress/Kela/Rosenthal

The 2 or 3 gonna get a Kintzler type deal. MILB deal with like 2-3 million when added

Also heard they looking to do a 2 for 1 type trade on a controllable RP and to sign Duvall. Harold and Brigham/Holloway for better RP?(JUST spitballing names)

Phelps to Toronto takes 1 out

Phelps signed for under $2 million, so you have to think some former closer/setup man will be in what seems to be the Marlins price level.

A 2 or 3 for 1 deal makes a ton of sense even if they sign a free agent.

                            • i have heard for several years now about Jordan Holloway. I've watched him for like 2 games last year and have followed his minor league trajectory and I can safely say there is no way that guy becomes a quality major league player. Maybe he pulls an Andrew miller and brad hand and all of a sudden learns how to throw strikes but I look at him as more like a sean west type (old name there) that just never can combine the great stuff with control

U know Holloway is a RHP and the other 3 are LHP?

They like him because he is 6'6 240 and can hit 98. Reason they dont wanna throw in the towel is had tons of arm injuries and think he can be a power RP if he learns control. Marlins have actually figured out that just because guys cant make it as a SP they can be RP(Only took 15 years to realize this). That is why they DFA Yamamoto-knew he couldnt start and no power

Unless they need his spot he likely sticks this year but last chance.Probably AAA setup/CL guy. He is only 24-Marlins have guys in Low A who are 24

If u throw 97-100 ML teams want u no matter if u have control or not. Shit look at guy Marlins signed 2 years ago-was like 28 pitched 6 months and they sent him to Jupiter cause he hit 98. Might not stick but teams would rather have 97-100 than 91 in pen

FYI I think Holloway is crap and should have been DFA-give his spot to Josh Roberson who has SP potential but too has had injury issues and is 24 too
