    • that is pretty cool and also completely out of left field

      • When we heard “outside the box” I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be someone from within, but this is certainly outside the box. I love it, though. It’s great to see a woman break the glass ceiling here, but she also seems incredibly qualified, and has worked in some of the best organizations from a developmental standpoint.

        • sports24/7 took the words out of my mouth. i looked into her more and she is like overqualified at this point. If she was a man she would have been a gm 10+ years ago. Good outside the box hire and she gets rave reviews from everyone. We now have 2 women at the top of our organization because I believe the COO is as well. Good stuff and for whatever its worth we finally get good PR for the first time in years.

The great Tyler Heineman Watch of 2020 lasted just three days...he signed with the Cardinals yesterday. Minors deal.

That doesn’t mean it’ll be the last time Lee mentions him.....far from it in fact I’m sure lol

Let's go back to my oft-discussed Austin Nola.

If you read a San Diego Padres 2021 Pre-Season Preview, the familiar name of Austin Nola appears.as the primary catcher. If you check out the top free agents available, the more familiar name of JT Realmuto sits near the top of the list. JT will play for over $20M next year. Nola will play for less than $600K.

In the abbreviated 2020 season, Realmuto put up a 1.2 WAR with an OPS of .840 and an OPS+ of 123. Nola was good for a .825 OPS abd a 1,29 OPS+ while scoring a 1.1 WAR. While their productivity was similar, their backgrounds were very different.

While both players were high school shortstops, Realmuto caught when the regular catcher took to the mound. A scout noticed what he brought behind the plate and the Marlins signed him as a backstop. Nola remained a shortstop in college at LSU, where his glove was sufficiently impressive to move DJ LeMahieu to second base, and he remained an infielder in the Marlins system until he reached age 26 in 2016,

Then it happened. The Marlins minor league coaching staff realized that Nola's lack of range and modest bat wouldn't get him to the majors ... this in spite of lots of positive attributes. That's when they engineered his conversion to catching. The fascinating story is here: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com...%20taxi%20squa d,a%20catcher%20in%20a%20game%20.

This unique success story is tarnished by the fact that Nola was allowed to walk when he qualified for free agency, and he immediately signed with Seattle. He found enough success as a catcher/utility player that he became a valuable trade chip in a deal with San Diego.

In my eyes, there's a lesson here ... and an opportunity. Why not target prospects for conversion? Why not gather a dozen potential backstops from the ranks of "imperfect" infielders and build your own fleet of catchers from the ground up? In addition to filling your own team's need behind the plate, you can create extremely valuable trade chips.

Every team needs catching. At least one team should make a point of building it.

                  • Hard for me to fault the Marlins for what's happened with Nola since he left. The guy is a complete outlier, his last 4 years in the Marlins organization he spent at least a chunk of time at AAA hitting in the hitter friendly PCL every year, and could barely muster above a .700 OPS in all that time. Anybody saying they foresaw a .200 point jump in OPS at AAA the next year and then quickly becoming a major league regular is a liar.

The article lists 19 prospects that have been assigned to the Wichita Wind Surge roster. Luis Palacios remains somewhat interesting to me. Perhaps the rest will be left in Wichita when the Marlins AAA affliate moves to Jacksonville in a few months.

Can someone explain this rule to me? So they put these guys on the AAA roster, it's not like they have to stay in AAA all of next season, right? So then what's the point?

If u dont put the guys on the AAA then u can claim them in the MilB portion of the Rule 5 for nothing

They will NOT be in AAA they are just protecting them from getting claimed

Easier way to look at this is IF a guy is eligible for the Rule 5 draft

If a guy is on 40 man,he is yours
If a guy is NOT on the 40 man,he can be picked and has to spend year in MLB
If a guy is NOT on the AAA roster he can be picked and he is gone to new team for good

                          • Marlins usually make 1 or 2 picks in the Milb part every year. Justin Bour was taken in this and they took Leon LY

Palacios might get looks but there is a reason why he wasnt added. #1 he is VERY young still(Innings wise) and #2 he is a soft tosser. Guys like this usually look amazing in DSL-Low A ball then as soon as they get to Hi A they get killed because everyone can hit a 88MPH FB. If u want an example look at Will Stewart!!!

The guys who will get looks are Josh Roberson/Tyler Stevens/Brian Miller

Roberson and Stevens are older 25 yr old RP types. Roberson is Holloway with better control(No clue why we didnt keep him over Holloway especially since Roberson is seen as a SP around MLB) and Miller is Sierra type. Older all defense with some speed

Marlins are looking at a few C(even tho most C they liked were added) and power LHB

So why don't they just call it a protection list? It really has nothing to do with AAA.
