  • Mattingly won Manager of the Year.

I don't think he's necessarily a great manager, but still happy for him. Guy is a class act, and it's clear his players love him.

Agree. I think he is a bad in game manager but for a rebuilding team he is a great guy to have. I think he is the perfect manager to start a rebuild before getting a more numbers oriented guy in there when we are ready to compete. MAttingly deserved this award though this year with how he kept us together.

      • i think i saw that mlbtr predicted JT only gets 5 years 125 million? That seems super light to me both in years and money. if thats the range he ends up in id be all over that kind of deal. I think he makes us into an instant contender.

That's a no-brainer for me if that's what it takes.

On the KBO broadcast they've brought up several times that the Marlins were in negotiations with Mel Rojas Jr. last spring, but refused to give him a guaranteed contract so he stayed in Korea. I wonder if there's still interest there. Rojas was a couple Batting Average points away from winning the Triple Crown in the KBO this year. .350 average 47 home runs. Might be a nice place holder until Bleday, Jesus Sanchez and company are ready.

          • If I was going to pay anybody (at any position), I'd be inclined to give JT the 5/125.

The Mel Rojas Jr thing is a bit mysterious. Through his mid-twenties he never really did much of anything in the minors. The fact that Dan Straily was the top pitcher in that league speaks volumes.

Eric Thames' numbers in KBO were pretty similar to what Rojas did this year, and he came back and had a couple good years in the big leagues. Like I said he'd just be a placeholder until the kids are ready. Basically the replacement for Matt Joyce.

Interesting. I’d have to imagine he’s looking for more...whether he gets it or not after the down revenue year remains to be seen......interestingly enough, I had posted this on Oct 15th at the other site:

We've seen the 8-year mega deals for catchers already like Mauer and Posey, and neither have worked out great. With JT, what, 30 now, I don't want anything beyond 5-6 years.

So, if you don't offer something at least to start that's a real offer , and he winds up taking something around what a "real" offer would be, it'd be a massive disappointment that there was a chance to get him with a legit reasonable offer.

TLDR: don't give him a BS lowball "we tried" offer that he's sure to decline out of hand.

I'm not good with coming up with numbers for contracts, but does 5/$125 act as a good starting point? And push up to maybe 6/$180 max?

Here are comparisons to Posey and Mauer:

                Posey: 8/$159M; AAV: $19.875M

                Mauer: 8/$184M; AAV: $23M

                Realmuto A: 5/$125M; AAV: $25M

                Realmuto B: 6/$160M; AAV: $26.667M

                Realmuto 6/$180M; AAV: $30M

All of those would give him the highest AAV for a catcher. Option B beats Posey's deal slightly (so he can say he got more), while Option C would come close to Mauer's overall figure as well.

Now, 25-30M/year is definitely a big chunk of overall payroll, so that's tough to swallow, and would depend on their budget forecasting.

Maybe 6/180 is too much for us, don't know - I'm just throwing out numbers. But that would be the absolute maximum, not a penny over. You make that offer, you can hold your heads high and say, yeah we offered him a huge deal that would've been the highest AAV for a catcher ever, and he declined, we did our best. If he wants more, or some 10 year 200M+ deal, see ya! It'd be irresponsible to do more.

Regardless of what you offer, I also think you frontload either deal while some of our guys are still cheaper, that way we can balance the money out as the younger guys make more later on.

                • Seems like the Marlins GM hire is getting close:

                  @CraigMish
Marlins are getting closer to naming the new Head of Baseball Operations. It’s been as secretive as anything I can recall. “Interesting” and “Outside the Box” are terms I have heard. I believe they have their choice. I just don’t know who it is.

                  Joel Sherman

                  @Joelsherman1
Take for what it's worth because this is from OUTSIDE the #Marlins but 1 name oft-repeated is their director of pro scouting Hadi Raad. Word is Miami wants to stay inside/less expensive. Raad internally well liked/respected. Would that be "interesting" and "outside the box?"

                  • I have very low expectations that it would actually happen, but getting Sixto for Realmuto, then turning around and getting JT back a couple years later when the team is ready to start actually competing, would be one of the best coups in Marlins history. The added bonus of Phillies fans' heads exploding at that would just be the icing on the cake.

Could be a number of guys

Like Sherman says they would like to stay inside but "inside" meaning the Yankees tree. Denbo is running the show and whomever it is wont have power. Main jobs include going to meetings/public speaking/talking to agents and players/calling on guys. Pretty much an office guy

You just described what Michael Hill did for the Marlins the last couple of years. Ownership didn't feel that was worth his salary. I heard Hill many times over the last few years, mostly in-game interviews, and he always delivered the same few sentences ... basically verbatim ... which said nothing.

Ya and they offered him 2-2.5 million to stay but he want MORE(what Jeff gave him). Jeter actually loves Mike Hill and what he does. The problem is what he does work wise isnt anything special. Mike Hill went from do contracts/making trades/being final voice on drafts under Jeff to sitting in an office/making calls and going to meetings under Jeter

ALOT of guys would jump for 2 million

Mike Hill actually wasnt that bad-he did his meetings/did his interviews/had respect from players/other FO and agents. They just didnt give him any actual power when they bought the team

                          • I just don't understand why you wouldn't put the guy with the most power at the highest position. If Denbo can't handle the interpersonal responsibilities that come with the GM position that speaks ill of him as a leader quite frankly, and I think just causes confusion within your organization.

He can handle it-he just isnt the type of guy to sit in an office all day. U have heard him talk on broadcasts, guy just is dying to get off of TV and watch baseball. Denbo wants to scout, travel, make decisions

                              • Rule 5 and tons of talent out there WOW,however Marlins have only 2 Top 30 prospects who need to be added

                                Miami Marlins:
                                13) Jose Devers, SS
                                17) Jerar Encarnacion, OF

He probably gets added but the #2 Prospect in Houston is eligible. Freudis Nova whom we had a deal with and was signed for 2.5 million till he failed PED test and Jeff said ill save the cash!! He is only 20 but damn he would look nice
