I think Olt might be the only guy in MLB I would consider trading JJ for (and not 1-1, a package deal with another big pitcher). Also, I'm talking about realistic trade chips, and no one be an asshole and say Mike Trout.

You can insert any franchise cornerstone slugging 3B already half a season into AA into this statement, but off the top of my head I cannot think of another one if that guy exists.

I'd trade him for Mike Trout.

Well, there's a 3B who's 3 years younger than Olt who's halfway through a full season of AA and was ranked higher than him on the BA list this season as well.

But he's not really a slugger.

When was the last time the Marlins and Rangers traded players? Was it the Urbina/Adrian Gonzalez trade?

Jim Bowden says the Rangers are focusing on Greinke.

I say that because you have to worry about the teams power potential longterm. Reyes, Brantly/Realmuto, presumably whatever non-Hamilton CF they get this offseason, Bonifacio/whoever plays at 2B probably doesn't hit much as Uggla is really an anomaly... all really don't have any mass slugging potential. Despite all those guys hopefully being good, still need to hit some. Yelich might have a little but reports say he is probably a 20 max guy. Morrison definitely could be a "second" power option if he works out. I don't think anyone doesn't think he couldn't whack 25+ moving forward.

I'm just imaging how the team is going to operate moving forward. The other positions look good (assuming CF FA acquisition), but that 3B is going to need to hit.

Just saying. Olt makes some sense to short and long term picture. If trading JJ, they need the picture perfect piece. He's probably the best one on paper, assuming nothing silly like Bundy/Hulzten type SP is around.

Does anyone know how Olt compares to Smoak, the guy the Rangers traded Cliff Lee for? Is he as highly regarded or less so?

BTW, Ranger fans can be just as irritating as Braves fans. I've got a bunch of them bugging me about unloading a precious prospect for "scrub" Josh Johnson.

                      I basically agree with you.

Unless Cherington gets drunk and offers Middlebrooks.

                        Absolutely. Let's get him drunk.

Marlins' stance 24 hours ago was that they would trade Josh Johnson OR Hanley, but that may be evolving, given interest in Johnson.

                            • So no 3B production/excitement for the rest of the season.

                              • Olt, a young starter for 2013, and power arm relievers and that is kind of a good deal for JJ.

Based on game thread recaps, I thought season was over 2 weeks ago.

And whose to say Donnie Bleeping Murphy isn't exciting?

Also if we're talking general excitement, I always bet 3 people in my section on the sea creature race. I usually take Angel.
