You're no troll. You're opinionated and stubborn like me, but no troll.

        CashInFist is a troll.

When you're a mediocre team and have been mediocre for years, you have nothing to lose taking a risk.

Keeping the same core is settling for mediocrity, at this point. Anibal is a very good pitcher, but you have to look at the context of the situation. What if he doesn't want to sign here? Furthermore, is it a wise investment to spend so much money on a pitching staff? We already have a shitload of money locked up to JJ, Buehrle, and Nolasco. Normally, the saying goes "develop the pitching, buy the bats;" this front office seems to be working rather backwards in that area.

Back to the mediocrity thing, think about what the A's did in the offseason.

Sure Gio and Cahill were/are good pitchers, sure Andrew Bailey is solid when healthy, but there was a bottom line to their situation. They were a bad team and those players had value. Now, by making the moves they made in the offseason, they're better off with the assets they got in return.

Ashy, the what if game can always be played.

Really, for me, failing on the Cabrera trade is enough. And I probably paint the front office with too broad a brush as a result, but from my perspective, that specific trade was too important to net zero substantive value. Given his age and sheer talent, the return was abysmal (even with the added burden of Dontrelle).

(I'm not actually saying that we shouldn't even TRY to get value for our players because I don't like the front office, rather, that at this point, I wish someone else was doing the work.)

I don't think it's silly. I think that you have to draw certain distinctions at certain points. When you have that much value on the table, and you squander it, the person responsible should be held accountable. He doesn't get paid to waste the single best player that ever played for this team.

I hadn't thought of that but now that you mentioned it, yes, I imagine the same.

There is a difference between saying "This was a big miss" and "This guy is wholly incapable of getting proper return in trades."

I know. I was just taking into account the risk.

We'll probably trade him, anyway. Doesn't seem like we're going to offer him a contract extension at all.
