They built a retractable roof to allow them to deal with undesirable or inclement weather. If the wind is so strong as to alter play (and it was, and it "probably" did) the roof and/or panels should be used. Just because it's a pretty new toy doesn't mean it should be forced into situations counterintuitive to its purpose.

From the vista level the wind gusts were strong enough to knock over my hat if I wasn't holding on to it. I can see how the wind was affecting the ball last night.

Lets see, I was actually present at the game and you were not. Who is armed with more facts? I'm going to take a wild guess and say me.

          • It doesn't seem like a wild guess... or even a guess at all.

            • That's the point.

              • But you said that your guess was wild. It wasn't a guess, not was it wild. Deuces are wild. Rick Ankiel is wild. Gorillas in the Amazon are wild. You're guess, is not wild.

                  • The sad part is, even though he got turned around, he tried to follow the ball into the glove with his hand, like he was in little league.

I'm sure he felt like absolute shit all night.

The preferred state is to watch baseball sans roof. For support, look at the complete eradication of dome stadiums in recent years with Seattle, Houston, and Minnesota using open or retractable roof stadiums to succeed the Kingdome, Astrodome, and Metrodome. In my view, you leave the roof open unless necessary.

And, I think the Marlins built the roof to make rain delays a thing of the past and improve the fan experience. It's all about making sure that fans will not be dissuaded from attending the game because of uncertainties from rain or feeling like they are in a humid microwave on a patented Miami summer day/night. To me, "strong wind" is not enough of a reason to close the roof. It's a fucking breeze. A lot of people would consider it perfect weather. There ought to be some gradation between "beach weather" and "oh shit, we need A/C."

Look, I absolutely love the heat (90+ = Heaven) and get cold pretty quickly, even at temperatures most people find comfortable. I shivered maybe once or twice yesterday but for the most part, it was a beautiful night for baseball and we sit right by where the wind comes in. I can sympathize with you, though, if you were freezing in the Upper Deck.

Btw, we really need to stop blowing Z's starts. Poor guy.
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

Being cold in South Florida is a wonderful, rare thing. Cherish it common.

There's a difference between cool weather and dealing with ongoing wild throughout the whole game. It wasn't comfortable at all. People's food and items were flying everywhere as well. Some people were getting smacked in the face by napkins that got blown away from other people.
