MIAMI, Fla. -- For years, the Marlins' dream of owning a stadium was just that - a dream. The dream seemed to be on the cusp of becoming reality in a few days, but the realization of the dream will have to wait a little longer, as the MarlinsGet your Marlins tickets now! found out late Saturday night that the new Marlins Park did not pass its final safety inspection.
"Obviously it's something we're extremely disappointed about, and something we feel awful about, but it isn't going to change the excitement around this ballclub," team president David Samson explained.
Instead of the sparkling new stadium in the Little Havana section of Miami, the Miami Marlins' game against the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals will be played in a familiar place - Sun Life Stadium. Fans will be able to exchange their Opening Day ticket for a similar ticket at Sun Life. "To be honest, some fans might end up with better seats," said Samson.
The team issued a statement saying that fans who purchased tickets to Opening Day would also be able to choose free tickets to one weeknight game during the season once the new ballpark does open. Parking passes purchased for Opening Day will be fully refunded.
Marlins Park is now slated for completion sometime in late April. This will not be the first time in recent memory that a ballpark has opened mid-season. In Seattle, Safeco Field opened on July 15, 1999 with the Mariners playing against the San Diego Padres. The Padres won 3-2.
