Also, just to be clear since this is way off topic. My initial point was that Logan needs to become the 1B pretty soon, and if it means Coghlan in LF for the time being, fine. FWIW, a long time Beinfest favorite, BJ Upton, is a free agent. I'd imagine the team has at least had some manner of discussion of a Bonifacio-Upton-Stanton OF.

I'm going to start a Chris Coghlan 2012 thread to continue the discussion there. From here, let's try to stick to Gaby and his struggles.

I think you give Gaby until June until this becomes a serious consideration.

But if this continues, Coghlan is not the man you put in there. We're still looking at a shit defensive OFer and a bad bat in the line up.

Cousins or Petersen is who you go with. At least then you're improving the defense. All of them are likely not going to do too well offensively but at least Pete or Cousins will be a plus defensively. Platoon them with Kearns (meh) or something for lefties.

I think the best idea right now would be...

vs. RHP: Lomo at 1B, Petersen in LF.
vs. LHP: Gaby at 1B, Lomo in LF.

The defense would be better on days we face righties; we wouldn't miss much with Gaby's bat on those days because Gaby has basically been a platoon player, throughout. He hasn't done anything since the 1st half last year and is just a career .730 .OPS guy against righties.

Just some numbers on Gaby to continue the discussion here:

Currently has:
7 LD% (10% below career average of 17.7%)
40 GB% (career: 36.7%)
51.9 FB% (career: 45%)
17.5 IFFB% (career: 10.2%)

Put that with a 20.2 K% and his 5.8 BB% and you got a really, really bad offensive baseball player. He was never going to be anything spectacular given that he was a gaps hitter without the HR power but he typically had shown some sort of consistency with that. Now, since the halfway point last year his production has dropped significantly. Unlike others, where you can maybe explain it with injuries, there doesn't seem to be much you can go by in figuring out why he sort of fell of this cliff.

I think everyone is completely right with Gaby needing a demotion. We really should consider platooning him with Logan at first.

And why are we using a 4-man bench currently? Our starting rotation is stacked and performing for the most part. We don't need the extra relief pitcher.
