The Marlins are un-retiring the No. 5 so left fielder Logan Morrison can wear it to honor his father, but the family of the Marlins' first team president isn't happy about it.

"It's disappointing. He gave his life to the Marlins,' said Betzi Barger, whose father Carl Barger was team president from July 8, 1991, until his death Dec. 9, 1992.

The Florida Marlins retired the No. 5 before the franchise's first game on April 5, 1993, to honor Barger, who had died of a ruptured aorta at baseball's winter meetings four months earlier. Barger was a huge fan of Joe DiMaggio, who wore that number.

"No other Florida Marlin will ever wear No. 5,' then-owner Wayne Huizenga said during a ceremony before that first game.

But now that the team has renamed itself the Miami Marlins as it prepares to move into a new ballpark, the organization decided it was time to grant Morrison's request to honor his dad.

Morrison had worn No. 20 since he was called up in 2010. But he always wanted to wear 5 because his father, Tom Morrison, who died in December 2010 of lung cancer, idolized Kansas City Royals third baseman George Brett, who wore No. 5.

"Carl Barger is a very important part of our history,' team president David Samson said. " ... Our view was that if there was ever something that came along that was truly compelling that we would take a look. And Logan Morrison's story is compelling.'

Samson said it was his understanding that the Barger family had signed off on the plan. But Barger's daughter, who lives in suburban Pittsburgh with her mother (Barger's ex-wife at the time the Marlins joined MLB), said that neither she nor her mother and sister has heard from the team.

"Nobody has contacted us,' Betzi Barger told The Palm Beach Post on Monday. "It's just a disappointment but there's nothing we can do. We're sorry we didn't find out about it except from you.'

The Marlins plan to honor Barger at their new ballpark with a plaque. The team wants to invite the Barger family to attend, but Betzi Barger isn't sure if they will.

No Marlin player's number has been retired, but the team, like the rest of Major League Baseball, retired No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson in 1997.

Staff researcher Niels Heimeriks contributed to this report.

Gave his life to the Marlins? He sure devoted a large portion of his life to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but to the Marlins?!

Yeah, figured the family wouldn't like it and I don't blame them. It would have been nice for the Marlins folk to reach out to them. I guess they were busy not hiring me to not keep losing arbitration hearings.

They're making a statue or something in his honor though. Means much more than a flag with a number on it.

Would have been nice to speak with the family first. I find the family's anger to be misplaced, however, his memory will still be honored, and he's equally, if not more, connected to the Pirates (who he kept in Pittsburgh) yet they, to my knowledge, don't honor his legacy at all.

You could never see what was on those flags anyways.

It's not really dishonoring him by letting Logan Morrison wear Joe DiMaggio's number, his family should just shut their traps. If I were ever the president of a baseball team, I wouldn't expect that team to retire Cal Ripken Jr's number after my death.

I'm sure they wouldn't have been as upset if they had had some sort of dialogue with the team about it, but at the end of the day it's hard to have too much sympathy for a guy whose memory will receive an upgrade.
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

Leave it to the Miami Marlins to take a national beating for the “unretiring” of a number.

In this case, it’s the No. 5 that Logan Morrison will wear this season in honor of his late father, Tom, who idolized Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett.

No Marlin has ever worn that number because it was retired before the inaugural 1993 season in honor of late team president Carl Barger, a devotee of Joe DiMaggio (who also wore No. 5).

                  So, what’s the problem?

Well, Betzi Barger, the late baseball executive’s daughter, told the Palm Beach Post that the family finds it “disappointing” the team is making No. 5 available. She said no one from the team had contacted her or her sister or mother, Carl Barger’s ex-wife.

                  Typical Marlins? Maybe not.

P.J. Loyello, the team’s senior vice president of communications and broadcasting, said he left messages for “three or four” different members of the Barger family, going back to September. The Marlins wanted to invite Barger’s immediate family to the closing ceremonies for the franchise’s 19-year run at Sun Life Stadium, but those messages — which were also left by another longtime member of the organization — apparently went unanswered.

The Marlins are still hoping to have representatives of the Barger family on hand for Opening Day in April, when they plan to unveil a permanent plaque in Carl Barger’s honor. However, after Betzi Barger’s published comments, that feel-good moment might not be happening.

“We’ll work through it,” Loyello said. “His memory will be honored.”

Here’s what Marlins President David Samson said about the decision to make No. 5 available: “Carl is critical to this franchise’s history. We’d been talking about it for awhile and the fact it’s a number that’s not associated with someone on the field. And we wanted to find a way in the new ballpark to properly honor him, and then it just came together with Logan, who had the [personal] tragedy, and that number was so meaningful to him.

“We just thought this was the perfect time, maybe the only time, that it would make sense to make that change.”

Samson planned to visit Marlins Park on Monday afternoon to “make sure [the plaque is] put in a place where people can recognize his contributions to our history.”

In some ways, the Marlins’ decision should please the Barger family. Rather than having the retirement of No. 5 as a footnote in club history, Carl Barger’s memory is suddenly “getting more attention now than he ever would have,” Samson said.

And just wait until LoMo starts “tweeting stupid stuff,” as manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday.

Hopefully the plaque ends up being a bit more attractive than this monstrosity

I'm in a "debate" with an idiot on facebook about how the Marlins are bad people for doing this to Barger.

I am not happy that I am replying to this idiot

That dude should have never asked for it in the first place. That scrub needs to take more b.p. and stop tweeting like a school girl. This will be a miserable failure after his cup of coffeee in the majors. What you say,is the same thing as if he asked for #42.It means more to him than it does to Jackie Robinson right now doesn't it? How about taking the shrine down in yankee stadium for one of the founding fathers of the yankees.(Mr.Stienbrenner).Doesn't mean anything to him right now.Does it?
