I don't think it's a huge deal and it's nice for Morrison, but it does kind of suck for Barger's family. I'm sure it seems like a bit of an insult. Like their family member's retired number didn't mean as much to the organization as any other retired number would mean.

I think the idea of having a non-player with a retired number is silly.

But I don't think I like the idea of un-retiring said number once it's already retired.

But I don't think I feel strongly about it at all.

The only thing I don't like about it is, if the guy was so unimportant enough that you'll unretire his number for a guy with less than 2 years of major league experience, why did you retire a number for him to begin with? It would be different if it was for Pujols but LoMo?

The current Marlins' peeps didn't retire his number.

Mibs, it's not like we're talking about Volstad here. LoMo is actually good.

It's not that Barger was unimportant, it's just that he shouldn't have been given a retired number in the first place. It was something that was done by Huizenga right after his death as a nice gesture, but really, it was not an appropriate way to honor an executive. He didn't have a number to retire...that should be reserved for players. More often, people would look at the #5 flag and just wonder who that was. A plaque in some prominent place in the ballpark that details what his role in the franchise's history was is a far better way to tell of his importance. On the plaque, it should mention that for the first 19 years of the team, while it was known as the "Florida Marlins", the team Barger helped create, no player wore #5 in his memory.

I mean, he hasn't proved it yet. I'm all for taking shots at Volstad but you have to make sense.

I think it was a real nice honor to have it retired for this many years, and I do think Barger would not care at this point. He would be thrilled the team is getting a gorgeous baseball only facility.

I think the main reason is he is going to be honored how he should be which wasn't exactly possible in JRS.

The best tribute to Barger would be something along the lines of what the Blue Jays did.

                              Felo deserves one too.
