Free agent left-hander Mark Buehrle toured the new Marlins ballpark Tuesday and caught up with an old friend, manager Ozzie Guillen, during a daylong visit with the team.
The Marlins are the first club to meet with Buehrle, who pitched for Guillen throughout the manager's eight seasons with the Chicago White Sox.
But that doesn't mean the Marlins have an inside track to sign Buehrle, a four-time All-Star. He also is drawing interest from teams including Boston, Texas and Washington as well as the New York Yankees. Buehrle's agent spoke Tuesday with Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman.
The Marlins very much want to reunite Buehrle and Guillen, but it's in Buehrle's best interests to let other interested teams set his market value before he makes a decision.
Buehrle, who will turn 33 in March, hasn't ruled out a return to the White Sox. And there is speculation that Buehrle - a native of St. Charles, Mo. - could land in St. Louis.
He made $14 million in 2011, the last of a four-year, $56 million contract. He was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 31 starts.
The Marlins are intrigued by the possibility of slotting Buehrle into their rotation behind ace right-hander Josh Johnson. Buehrle, it is hoped, would be the dominant left-handed starter the Marlins have lacked.
"It would be great for the team as a whole. He's a leader in the clubhouse and would really help out the rotation,' Johnson said Tuesday in a text message.
Buehrle has posted 11 consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins, 200 innings and 30 starts - the longest such active streak in baseball. His 24-6 record against National League teams is the best of any active player with at least 35 starts.
He has pitched two no-hitters, including a perfect game, and won a World Series ring in 2005.
Former Cincinnati and Washington general manager Jim Bowden, in his espn.com column, estimated that Buehrle would be able to get a four-year deal for $16 million a year.
Buehrle was ranked fourth on Bowden's list of most lucrative potential contracts this winter in terms of average annual value. The first three were Albert Pujols ($27 million a year), Prince Fielder ($24 million) and Jose Reyes ($18 million).
The Marlins are considering all of those players. They're scheduled to meet with Reyes, the former New York Mets shortstop, on Wednesday before flying to the Dominican Republic on Thursday to see center fielder Yoenis Cespedes, a prospect who defected from Cuba.
On Friday, the team will hold a ceremony to re-brand the franchise as the Miami Marlins.
