  • He totally could put up a line comparable to Garza.

    He hasn't since 2008.
    --------------------
8.7 bWAR over the last three years for Garza. 1.5 for Nolasco. 1 for Volstad.

I love Nolasco's potential as much as anyone. But Garza's pretty clearly a better pitcher.

    • You can't get talent without giving anything. Trade Yelich and whoever else you need to trade in order to make us a contender in 2012. We will worry about the rest later.

That's nonsense. You think Theo Epstein and his people know less about this guy's value than fucking Todd?
You misunderstood. His value isn't as high as it will be after next season imo (especially since our system is pretty baron).. You don't sell low on a guy.

        • Trading him next offseason doesn't help this team right now.

          • If we could get Garza without having to give up Morrison it would be a great deal for us. I just dont see how it would happen.

              • You don't think that we are in an incredibly unique situation where, thanks to a new park, a previous throwaway may suddenly (unexpectedly?) improve. Just look at 2009 Nick Swisher.

                  • I think that with how big our park figures to play, Volstad and Nolasco could put us in a position to not "need" to upgrade the rotation merely "want" to, which puts us in a different situation come July.

                    • It's not just going to help our pitchers, though. If Ricky Nolasco and Chris Volstad allow fewer runs because of the park, opposing pitchers will do the exact same thing. The park doesn't make the pitchers better, it simply makes it harder to score runs overall. For both teams. Which means crappy pitchers will still allow more runs than their opponents.

                      • Given the interest in Garza and what the Cubs want, I'd say we're a long shot to get him, anyway.

There is "no real favorite'' in the five-team Matt Garza sweepstakes, according to someone familiar with the talks.

The teams involved the derby for the 28-year-old Cubs righthander at this point are the Yankees, Blue Jays, Tigers, Red Sox and Marlins. With the Cubs seeking young pitchers, it would seem that the Yankees, Blue Jays and Tigers could hold an edge ultimately. The Yankees have Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances, the Tigers Jacob Turner and the Blue Jays several well-regarded prospects at the lower levels. The Cubs are hoping to improve their young pitching stock, and Garza is the most marketable player they're willing to deal.

The Red Sox earlier named Garza, who went 10-10 with a 3.31 ERA in 2011, his only one with the Cubs, as a target in Theo Epstein compensation talks, but it's unclear wether the Cubs would even consider trying to solve the compensation issue while making a bigger Garza deal with Boston. They wouldn't surrender Garza straight-up for Epstein, and it's possible the Cubs would want to keep Garza and the compensation issues totally separate. The Red Sox don't have pitching prospects to match the Yankees or Blue Jays but do have hard-throwing righthander Anthony Ranaudo, who was drafted by Epstein, the new Cubs president.

The Cubs are obviously rebuilding but have been nonetheless tied to the Prince Fielder derby. A Cubs person suggested that while Fielder is the type of player they need, they aren't willing to pursue Fielder at all costs, a not unfamiliar refain for teams pursuing big-name free agents.

                        • Well CJ & Gio are off the table. According to previous reports, we are interested in Garza, Wandy and Oswalt. You have to think the Fish prefer Garza over the other two, and I think they will do whatever is possible in order to get him. Maybe we will complete a 3 team deal and get a young SP for Nolasco and trade him along with Gaby and something else (not Yelich at this point), for Garza and something else (maybe Byrd?).

Gaby, B+ MiLB SP & Dominguez (maybe Ceda too?) for Garza & Byrd?

When the hell is Cespedes getting his residency? They keep saying it's going to be "soon" but I've been hearing that for a month already. I think I heard yesterday that he will become a FA this week. This is what seems to be holding us up in all trade talks.

If you can pull off the above, you have:

                          JJ
                          Garza
                          Buehrle
                          Anibal
                          Volstad/Sanabia

                          Reyes
                          LoMo
                          H2R
                          Stanton
                          Cespedes
                          Byrd
                          Buck
                          Infante

and Boni as your Super-utility guy.

The Marlins don't have any B+ minor league starters. And the precedent has been set with Gio/Latos for big starters already. Need more talent and players than that.

Conceptually speaking, something like Yelich, Gaby, Dominguez, James/Rasmussen is at minimum for Garza and the best the Marlins could do considering they have no premium SP prospect. That's assuming of course we're not talking about Morrison. Byrd you'd toss in Coghlan/Ceda and another projectable reliever. Maybe not even that if the Marlins would eat his salary. Could the Cubs do better? Maybe if NYY will part with their young starters Marlins can't match that, but it wouldn't be a bad trade for the Cubs to take something similar to above for Garza.

I don't think there is anyway this organization does not give him a starting position to start the year after how well he did this past season. He has earned it. Maybe he doesn't hack it again and they have to put him back as super utility in June, but no way to start the year.

                            • Anyone surprised BizBallzMauryz named Jeff Passan one of the better writers to follow on Twitter partly because of his Marlins-bashing?

@JeffPassan – Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. Busts out knowledge while busting chops. The late John Brattain used to beat the Marlins mercilessly over their business practices, but Passan may have taken it to a new level. Rarely does something slip by him.

                                They are both tools.

Passan is some sort of journalistic genius because he chooses to hammer on an easy target? To me, someone with real skill would be the person who reports on something before it happens and not just rehashes past events in a slanted negative way....but that's just me.
