It's highly likely West would be one of the first to go. He hasn't been able to stay healthy, hasn't really helped us when he has been healthy and he's out of options next year. He's a definite DFA candidate.
I think Hensley and Murphy would be the first two cuts as they are arbitration eligible. No chance they fit in. Oviedo and Badenhop are also likely cuts, but the team might be able to trade them as their projected arb numbers are not unreasonable so I think they'll hold onto them until the deadline. But they'll cut them if they have to. That's 4 right there, they don't need to start considering prospect cuts jut yet. They can "showcase" West in Spring Training and try to move him in a Hayden Penn type deal in April. But he, Hatcher, Rosario, Caminero, maybe Poveda, would be the next group. They will keep Reed. They like him. They just sent him to the AFL.
As for Volstad, I think they tender him after spending so much money on a closer and he's the 5, with an AAA rotation of Leblanc, Sanabia, Hand, Koehler, and Villanueva, and James in AA. That's not so terrible.

Y'all do realize that Oviedo isn't on the 40 right now? He's suspended meaning he doesn't count towards it anyway (kinda like having someone on the 60-day DL)

Not too sure about that.

He is. He had options used in '09, '10 and '11 and he was drafted in 2005 meaning he's past the 5 years of professional baseball rule to get a fourth option.

I said before the offseason began that I wouldn't be upset if they signed a closer/kept a Volstad as the #5, and the majority thought it was terrible.
I still don't think Volstad's coming back though; It seems like the organization is disappointed with him (and West, for that matter).
Moves like this get criticized because, sabermetrically, we improve our record by about a win so whoopty-doo.
Well, assuming Bell returns to 09/10 Bell (which is possible), the difference between a Heath Bell and Mark Buehrle who's been consistently worth ~3.5 wins the past three years is approximately...one win.
Buehrle's looking for probably another year, more money, and apparently wants a no-trade clause. And he's regarded as the 2nd best pitcher on the market with about half the teams in the big leagues rumored to be interested, meaning there's a strong chance we don't even get him if we keep waiting for something to happen.
Bell's not a waste of money. It might be an inefficent use of money, but the same can be said for a lot of free agents.
Also, while the sabermetric world views it as dumb, I have to question how dumb it is if every team keeps doing it (even the A's).
--------------------
Not to mention the fact that acquiring a closer like Bell might actually give us some leverage in signing one of these SP's.
