    Yeah, yuck

Two guys that could be interesting come January - though they likely won't take a minor league deal - Posada and Derrek Lee. There's your bench power and Sunday starter.
Well, considering Murphy is guaranteed via an arbitration tender, I'd say that's a lock.

    Murphy
    Hayes
    Petersen/Rowand/Cousins
    Coghlan/Green
    "Bat"/Rowand

Lee would be incredible, but he's not going to take a bench job. He'll find someone who will let him hit and play a lot of 1B. He pretty much out hit Gaby last year, especially in the second half. He's not sitting behind him.

Posada is really interesting. I think he'd be great to help out the clubhouse and whatever other intangible bullshit one might say, but more importantly he can still hit RHP for power and would never get cheated up there. I like the idea of carrying both Hayes and Posada, because Hayes could easily turn into a Doumit/Inge type and play multiple places on the field, and Posada could cover C or 1B in a pinch. It would really help with flexibility being able to pinch hit with either backup catcher too.

I am for Posada, assuming he is reasonable about where he is in his career and would embrace his role.

    • Yeah, I agree with Murphy, heck, I'd go so far as to say I doubt Green will be able to hit at the Dobbsian pace it will take to have him force his way onto the bench so he's AAAA depth.

Somewhere, though, we need to find power for the bench. Posada would be a retardagood fit.

      • Thoughts on Andruw Jones to fill that role?

        • Yankees want to keep him. He's going to get $3ish mil easily. Don't think that's a "fit."

If we're cherry picking a little bit, if they did bring in Posada:

            Posada 2011 vs RHP - .269/.348/.466 (.814), 14 HR in 279 AB
            Coghlan career vs RHP .296/.361/.442 (.803), 2011 vs RHP .278/.347/.454 (.801)
            Petersen 2011 - .265/.356/.387 (.744)
            Hayes career - .225/.284/.417 (.701)
            Murphy career vs LHP - .222/.302/.420 (.722)

That's a pretty solid bench on paper. They only thing I really hate though is Posada and Coghlan would get destroyed by LOOGYs, and everyone else doesn't exactly scream confidence if the team had to routinely rely on Petersen and Murphy to hit. But I guess that's why they are bench players.

            • I'm really on board with a Posada bounce back v. LHP in 2012 (if he plays). Career, he has basically the same OPS vs. LHP/RHP (.846 to .852) and in 2010 he was actually more successful against LHP (.833 OPS, .493 SLG) than RHP (.799 OPS, .433 SLG).
              --------------------
Also, just for kicks, career .840 OPS (68 PA) vs. Halladay.
SLG .462 against Cliff Lee. (41 PA)

              • Can Posada even catch anymore?

                • He didn't last year.

He wanted to, Yankees wanted to keep him "fresh."

                  • I think he'd be able to every now and then, but they wouldn't need to do it past 15-20 games (and that doesn't include just starts) considering they play Buck nonstop and Hayes is capable.

                        • Nothing really earth-shattering but Samson said today on his weekly appearance on the LeBetard show that we can expect more of Aaron Rowand type signings but that the major signings are over.

He was also asked about interest in trading for Gio. He kind of dodged the question a bit but he didn't really make it sound like we would be making any trades.

                          • "I'm not...I think we're done with signings of that magnitude. We're not done trying to add complimentary pieces." (just listened to the interview).

Yeah, that's why I said Aaron Rowand kinds of deals. Not major, just complimentary.

                              • ### Single-game tickets will not go on sale until FanFest in early March, possibly later. Samson said the Marlins expect to finish with the eighth- or ninth-highest season-ticket total in baseball but declined to give numbers. He said hundreds of tickets have been sold each day since the team signed Bell, Reyes and Buehrle.
