He put up a 3.55 FIP last season, which is pretty good considering he played half the year at U.S. Cellular. The last 3 seasons he's pitched 200 IP and had a WAR of 3.6, 3.8, 3.8.

Don't compare him to Volstad. Volstad can't sniff his jock.
If you want to use the FIP, Jackson had a lower FIP than CJ, as well as Buehrle, and almost a whole point less than Volstad.

2011 FIP/WAR among off season SP candidates:

    Gio: 3.64 / 3.5

    Shields: 3.43 / 4.9

    Jackson: 3.55 / 3.8

    CJ: 3.24 / 5.9

    Buehrle: 3.98 / 3.4

    Maholm : 3.78 / 2.1

    Oswalt : 3.44 / 2.5

    • So what you're saying is he's pretty good and it makes a lot of sense that people would want him.

        • Like, he's not an ace, but he's a pretty solid pitcher. He'd easily be our #3, and would give us 4 pretty good potential starters.

No, I just think your counterargument was silly considering it could be said for every area/player on the team.

            • Any idea what Jackson wants?

              2/16?

Rumor is he wants a four-year deal.

                • @JCRMarlinsbeat: RT @DKnobler: Rays seem dead-set against trading Shields. They might listen on Hellickson before they listen on Shields (very unlikely they trade either)

Certain people are more likely to improve than others, no?

We have more quality depth at the relief pitcher spot than any other in our organization right now. It would be a serious misallocation of resources to go after one for big bucks.

                    • odd. I'd definitely do Lomo + for Hellickson but I'd be iffy on lomo straight up for Shields.

                      • Jeremy Hellickson might as well be Mike Stanton off-limits wise at this point

                          Ugh. No he wouldn't.

Reyes is going to command A LOT of money, and he isn't going to be worth near what he gets. His speed is the main thing that makes him a good player. He doesn't have a very good eye (he's walked only 74 times the past two seasons combined), isn't very good defensively, and doesn't hit for power.

Now that would all be okay if it weren't for the fact that Reyes has been having hamstring issues since 2009, and for a guy whose speed essentially makes his whole game, that has to be a huge concern. Let's also remember that Reyes' BABIP was .353 this past season, so, chances are, he is going to regress quite a bit in 2012.

Reyes is far too risky of a player for the Marlins to sign in their current situation, in my opinion. As far as I'm concerned, he has "worst contract of the off-season" written all over him.

                          • He also struck out less than he walked and had a 21% line drive rate. 09 was basically his only truly unhealthy season. Last year was his lowest amount of games played outside of 09 and he played in 136 games. He's a really impressive contact hitter and he won't lose his speed anytime soon. I think he's worth the money but the number of years is where I'd be careful.

                            • If the Marlins were ran by Soflamarlins.com we would not sign anybody.

                              Pujols: too much money/many years.

Fielder: too fat to invest in.

                              Reyes: injury issues/too much money.

                              CJ: too expensive.

Grady: knee problems/ too much money.

                              Buehrle: well there's 100% he's not coming.

We sound like a bunch of Florida Marlin fans. This is a new era, a new way of us to look at things, Miami Marlins baseball.

Get your pussies off the pavement, fellas.

Let's spend some $$$$$.. It's all about taking risks.

                              • Chris and Big Z are starting to sound alike with the whole taking risks. We need to be smart with our money. If we want at closer and maybe a reclamation project how about George Sherrill? Won't command a lot of money and maybe he can turn it around? Stupid to spend big dollars on a closer. Signing Reyes solves our problems. Solves our 3b & cf need and we can then focus on SP.
